Ever Since Last Year, my drum instructor has had us practice before performance, perform, and then practice after performances. This may sound like its a lot but sometimes the line actually looks forward to the practice After <i>more</i> than they look forward to the performance itself. Sometimes its to the point where we don’t actually get to sit down with the band until the announcement of the scores but its ok what else is there to do? Why waste time that you can spend bettering yourself and the line? That’s how we look at it. My question is who else’s line practices after the performance? Or just explain your views on practicing after performance. All input would be greatly appreciated!

I think that practicing as a line after preformance is a great idea, if you have the time, the space, and you're willing to give up seeing the rest of you're competition for the day. There was never time for that when I was in high school, we always preformed close to the end of the day and received awards shortly after. If we did preform early enough, I would assume that all the warm-up spaces would be reserved for bands and lines actually warming-up. So while it is a good concept, I don't think it would work out for a lot of people.

We dont practice as a line together, but we hack on pads for the bus ride home or while the hornline and pit is loading. Lots of fun. We play like really crazy combinations of jed or other wierd stuff. Its snugglebunny of fun.

I like practicing before the performance. But not really afterwards. I like to watch the competition to get ideas for next year or for the next performance. Your drumline is never too good to learn. But my drumline does practices on saturdays at a cadets house or something to keep up on the practicing.

We've never practiced after a performance before. Its not a bad idea though if everyone is really dedicated and has the time.
So do you guys just leave your uniforms from the performance on when you practice afterwards?

Practicing after the performance is a pretty good idea. It gives you a chance to work out mistakes while they are still fresh in you mind. We may start doing that next year.

We used to do that 2 years ago.....but then we started performing later this year.

My high school never had time to do it, and even if we did our instructor was an...well...not cool to put it nicely about stuff like that.

But this summer if we had time to we all just got out snare/tenor stands and practiced parts we had messed up in little groups. Maybe groups of 2 or 3. It really helps with consistency. Also, people tend to mess up different things in the show then they do in practice for whatever pressure or adrenaline reasons. So it's good to find out what's wrong and immediately work it out.

Our band doesn't do those kinds of competitions, but we do performances all the time. They never end until we get home. Parades in New York we play until we load the buses. When unload we play until we can't stay any longer.

We didn't use to practice after performing all the time but we did do it a few times. If we were having a really good year then we would, right after we got off the field we would just set up and while the band was changing and putting their stuff away we would be practicing. It really helped and everyone enjoyed it. It was fun because we still had our "high" from performing so it was a good time to practice.

We don't if its a competition because normally we play last or just before the last band, so we don't really have time. At football games, we play on the pads in the stands together, but generally, we don't practice after a performence. Personally, I wouldn't want to. I much prefer the practices right before a performence, when everyone's focased on the performence.

After comps, our band instructor wants the whole band to stay together so the line cant get any practice after our performance. I like that idea though, you get to work on things you had trouble with in the performance.
