I've played mallets my whole tenor life. But for a upcoming solo I'm trying Vegas. I don't like the sound as much as mallets, but it is much easier to move around the drums. I can finally play 1-2-3 scrapes fairly consistently. I don't think i'll play them all the time but I see they have their place in my stick bag.

Of the Vic Firth tenor sticks, I use the Ralph Hardions for more power or a full tenor sound, especially for lower tuned drums...for lighter, or faster pased playing I like the Vegas.

I used to wrap the tips of my Vegas with yarn to get a nice "puffy" mallet with the same feel as the vegas...sometimes It even balanced out the weight. I'm interested in the new swizzles. I'v also used the blastix, blades, and those half timpani/ half maraca mallets that used to be available.

***Thor - rattan is like bamboo, used for vibraphone, marimba, w/e

i just use an old pair of (white) cookies. I love the hollow metal mallets.

I'm somewhat new to multi-tenors, so what's so great about usin' sticks instead of mallets? (other than cost)

I switch in between the white cookie ones <img src="/threads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> and the Vegas.. I love the response from the white cookies, but the Vegas feel more natural for my kinda playing. I never thought I would be playing tenors. I am....

Thom Hannums work nicely when you get a balanced pair.

the good thing about using sticks over mallets is because some poeple prefer the feel of a drumstick over a mallet and its more comfortable for them to play with. You can do easier rim shots with them and things like double drum bouncing and back sticking.
