This is my first year in the band.I'm in the 10th playing tenor(if my ma let's me go to band camp) and I want to play snare in 11th and quad in 12th be cause most of our more experienced drummers are leaving. I need some motivation and was wondering if you guys/girls think it is possible to do this within 2yrs.

When you say tenor..you mean tenor sax? You referred to quads later in your post, which makes me think you play tenor sax instead of tenor (quints or quads).

I hope not to break the ice under your feet, but I hope you've been practicing and will continue practicing often. Depending on how advanced your drumline is will tell whether or not you will make it..but, if they are low on players, they may take anyone that can hack out a rhythm.

If you tell us the caliber of your line, we may be able to give you better advice. Describe the age levels, playing abilities, technique, and dicipline of your line please!

I did mean tenor drum, our drumlie ranges from 16(the more experienced because they've been in the band since 6th grade) to 14, We mostly make up our cadences, and they use many techniques and practice to perfect them. The dicispline is harsh. They say listen and if you laugh you run but the section he know when your trying and he might give a little slack but other than thatit's pretty strict

I agree,

practice is very important, be sure to check out Gary E. Smith's THE SYSTEM for motivation and being a leader. If you set an example for others older than you, you will get respect.

Keep on drumming

I see no difficulty in your goal. I go to a smaller high school and started my freshman year on snare. The next year I was playing quads. With enough practice you should have no problems, bass to snare is the hardest transition, but going from snare to quads wasn't hard at all for me.

For an example of what can be done in a few short years with enough practice, take a look at Mike McIntosh's bio on the Yamaha web site:

Quote:

Michael McIntosh began his musical adventure playing saxophone until, as a high school sophomore, he experienced a drum and bugle corps show. In 1985, Mike began dabbling in marching percussion playing trios, then snare for the Brentwood high school marching band, Brentwood, TN. While continuing as a wind player in the wind ensemble, Mike took a shine to marching percussion and in 1988, marched his first year of drum corps playing snare for the Concord Blue Devils...

Three years after first picking up a pair of sticks, he's in the Blue Devils' snare line.
