hatred towards getting bass drum

In my drumline there used to be a "rule" that freshman got bassdrum. This was because freshman who didnt know how to march could handle and easier part. Well last year we got a new Band Director and now there are actual try outs. Still freshman hate the fact of getting bass drum. What can we do to motivate them to actually wanna play bass instead of just hating it?

we have the same rule at my school and no one has ever complained about it. sitting down with them and asking them why they dont want to play bass is a good start. work out the kinks as to why they DONT want to play. then as skydog said show them some cool vids and stuff and maybe they will be turned on to bass drumming. hope i was of help.

at my hs, if they're good they go on a better instrument. i played bass drum my first year but halfway through the summer schedule got moved to snare because they knew that i was good. it pissed a ton of upper classmen off so they moved me back. i could care less if a frosh got on snare line as long as they can play.

Maybe you could get your line together and go to a local DCI show. You could check out some lines in the lot. Then u can go watch the same line in action on the field. Watching a DCI line up close is what first made me realize the bass drum is no joke.

I agree with many others here in saying that you must show them somehow what a bass line CAN do. You must also let them know that there WERE tryouts and the current configuration is the best for the whole band. Also try telling them that the harder they try at bass the more likely they are to be moved up onto a harder piece.

It sounds like the issue is the freshman hate bass because you make them hate it. From what I hear about the "better sections" and whatnot you dont value your bassline very much nor the people that are on it. A highschool drumline doesnt have to be all about the snares. At my highschool we will be marching two freshmen on snare (thats the entire line). A freshman and a 3 year vet on tenors. Then myself and another 4 year vet, along with 3 others (either freshmen or where in the pit last year) on the bassline. You may gasp and call us names for not going with the crowd on putting your best players on snare. However, why do that if thats not where our players belong? I dont mind if our snares aren't so hot but I feel great about the fact that myself and this other vet have brought in 2 freshman and a sophmore and have gotten our bass parts clean. And next year because we showed a genuine interest in helping them out, and showing them that they are a very intergral part of the drumline/marching band, they will return and we will once again have a good bassline. So dont have "In the Lot" vids do your work for you. Inspire your freshman yourself.

Well first of all i got top bass my freshman year and i was glad. And what do they expect? to play snare or tenors even if they're not good enough, just tell them it's a step to learn to march well and get used to the whole marching band situation and next year if they improve they can play snare or tenor or whatever they qualify for. Another thing is to add in a couple cool bass parts or runs to get them into it. THats what my drumline instructor did.

I'm having the same exact problem on my line, and now that I'm head drum major I have less time to deal with it. All of our 6 bass drummers from last season aspire to be snare drummers. What's worse is that the band director does treat it as a hierarchy whereas Cymbals are the lowest, then come basses, (sometimes single tenors in between) snares, and quads/quints/tri tenors. We have a LOT of people that want to be on the line, but a definite shortage of people who know what they're doing. Since we're a show style showing them some DCI basslines do runs won't help much. Most of them can't read music. I want them to love their instruments, whether it is bass, cymbals, or snare. And EastSnare, it's not about taking the first step on bass drum to move on to better things; it's to master bass drum and love the instrument for what it is without aspiring to rip up a snare drum.

What really gets my ticked it people who think bass drum is "easier". It can be by far the hardest line in the drumline. If you write just unisons and a couple 8'th note splits, sure bass drum is really easy. BUT, if you look at a really great bassline with hard parts you will understand. It is 4,5, or 6 people playing one part. So with snair, if you don't understand a part you ask the guy next to you, who in most cases is playing the exact same part. However, in bassdrumming you are the only one on the line playing that part. At my high school (Timber Creek) freshman rarely get put on the bassline. This is because of how challenging it is. I hate the steriotype that bassdrum=easy parts...No section is any "easier" than the other they all have their challenges. Lets take a look at them since I am here anyways
Tenors: Obviously the multi drums is a challenge in itself. Playing around patterns and playing sweeps and rolls from drum to drum is just not easy, but you can do it if you take the time to slow it down and work it out.
Snair: One of the obvious reasons is because you are playing traditional grip. Totally different from anything you've ever tried to play. They also, most of the times have the "fastest and hardest licks"
Bass: Well lets look at the bass drum itself...Its vertical not horizontal. Gravity is not working with you. Second, like the snare drum you have a total different grip. Also like i said earlier you are splitting one part so it can get difficult if the parts are written to challenge you.
Anyways thats my post. I know if you read your probly just gonna think im crazy, but thats just what I think. I probly dind't say it the best way but thats what it is.
Thanks for reading, -brandon

Yeah, I'd say that these days freshies come up to High School with the idea that pit and bass drum are somehow insuperior to other drums... Not so at all, try and show them that playing bass drum is just as fun and important as playing Tenors or Snare... Teaching them some awesome cadences with groovin' bass lines helps.

As said before, learning on Bass is one of the best starting points for any marching percussionist. Being the center of a beat, having the heartbeat of the band being on you, is a great experience. I think every drummer should do it. Most end up loving it.

show them the clip of UNT at pasic. i guarantee you that bassline is better than any high school and a ton of college snare lines.
i can't really relate. we have an opposite thing at my school. freshmen are almost never on bass because they can't handle splits as well as they could handle a snare part, but they usually just don't make drums anyway. we had our first freshman bass last year, but he was good. he deserved it.

Bass is awesome. The only problem I had is that I was able to play bass really well, and stuck with other kids who didn't know squat about the instrument and didn't practice...
BUT, I got them in shape this year and now we have a rockin' bass line that people actually are looking forward to joining next year.
I think the bassline is usually the closest section in the drumline because they have to be to get their crap right. You know? 1 person playing all the drums.
This year as bass captain ive made sure that all the bass drumers bonded by having extra sectionals were we got stuff done, but had fun...Making bassline hoodys ect.
It all helps.

I find it interesting that a lot of people have issues with bass. At my high school, a lot of people got upset about being in pit. Bass was a step-up from pit, and from there tenors, and snare.
Like said, show them awesome bass lines. Write difficult exercises and challenge them to learn them. Chances are they think they are too good for bass. Once you show them what a good bass line is capable of, they will no longer think that.
Let them know that if they dislike bass, it is just a stepping stone. Say, "If you can't handle learning bass and doing a good job, why do you think you can handle a snare, or tenors?"

Now, the only thing I didn't like about bass was that I kept whacking my fingers on the rim when I played. By the way, how do you help to not do that?

yeah at my school we have auditions or watev even though most ppl head into them alrdy knowing that the freshman r gonna b in the pit or possibly play bass.... like generally speaking ur gonna b a better player if ur older thats y most lines have junior/senior snare lines... theyll get a chance one day they just have to practice at it... remind them that its a progressional ladder.... u have to start at the bottom rung until u can play with the experienced ones... u cant just start at the top.... then theres nowhere 2 go but down...

I think this happens very often.. but i agree, showing them a good bassline is key. If you can show them DCI lines or WGI dvds or especially can take them to see these lines that is something inspiring. A lot of people put an emphasis on bass like it is easier, and i did that in high school, but now that i have given help here and there its so much easier for me on the outside to see that bass is a different entity, and the skill to playing bass is different than snare and tenor, because how many snare lines can right away play a split between themselves? For example, you have a line of 4 snares and 4 basses or something and midway through the season you give both the same split... you designate which snare will represent which part... how successful will the snares be able to do this in the time that the basses can master it. There is a very different sense of team work and communication, and basses are all individuals contributing to a whole while most of the time the snares and tenors are units that contribute to that whole. The parts may be 'easier' in the sense that there are less notes, but the basses learn timing and fitting their parts into the show more strictly. thats how i feel at least, but i never marched a bass line. a good bass line can take the crowd over for anyline.. phantom does it a lot.

well my drumlines stupid see I'm the best snare we have but my director cut it down to two snares instead of three cause we had two veterans and one of the snares hates me b/c I"m better than her and she's a year older so she thinks it should be the other way around which is incredibly sweet and then I'm not going to make tenors because I had to join try outs on the last day of try outs cause that's when our director told us we'd only have two snares and they expected me to learn everything in two hours and the director has ignored all the corps level exercises I've been playing so he'll probably try to stick me on bass
now don't get me wrong I love basses but it's just not were my passion lies and I'm no good at it and I'm not going to drag the line down and I haven't been treated fairly lately so if he tries to put me on bass I'll probably leave my drumline and the wierdest part is I'm in a drum corps and everything looks down on me so I'll still have another place to shine, even though I'm the worst in drum corps they still respect and teach me while it's opposite at my school

No offense to any bass people out there...but I didn't really enjoy my first year on bass. I played 4th... but it was really fun at first, but when I saw across from me the tenors...I just wanted them so much more.

sorry if I'm getting annoying with the whole 'best' thing, but the problem isn't really that he's an idiot, but he's show style and that's all he's ever known. Anybody who has ever seen me play with my corps knows that I should be on snare, but he doesn't think I can 'handle' it because I'm corps which seemingly sucks to him or something just since he's not that style. Now we have a corps style instructor from my corps who seems to think I'm needed more on bass but knows that I'm good at snare. That's all I needed. I'm willing to be do what's best for the line if it's really what's best. I disagree with that being the best thing for the line since one of snares is absolutely horrible, but I trust our new instructor.

In all fairness, we have to start somewhere with our drumming. Let your basses know that you have to start at the bottom and move up based on a teamwork system. even though the movie drumline was based on a snare player - he learned that it wasn't all about himself and his ability, rather his commitment to work within the team of his line and to work as a group rather than promoting self.

I would say just stop handing it to them. Make them see that it is a privilege to march a drum their freshman year. Maybe up the difficulty of the parts. Have some upperclassmen on the bass line. Something to make them want to strive to make the bass line... Because the typical JR. High school thinking is that "If you play a bass drum, you must suck." When really, the bass line is one of the most difficult things to play mentally. You always have to be in-sync with the rest of the bass line. You are relying on every one of them to get their parts right. If one person screws up, judges credit the whole bass line for messing up. Bass lines are just as important as snares or tenors. It takes a whole different kind of chop to play bass.

Have them try doing a dance routine while playing splits. That might show them how hard splits can be.
And yes, we do that in my show. At the end of the drum break, we're at a hold and we do leg movements while we play. The basses just happen to be splitting, which makes the leg movement part really hard.
True that. Also, if you're school happens to do indoor, and you have a more theatrically/visually inclined instructor, then you'll be doing a lot of body movements similiar to this while playing splits. It's actually quite common.

I played bass my sophomore year and it has to have been the most fun I've had on a drum. Junior and senior years, and freshman college, I was on snare. Snare is cool and all, and it is intense, but it really isn't as fun (but you do get that fighter pilot attitude high). You have to worry about all kinds of minute details and being super clean. Bass drums just get to rock out and have fun! Then when those crazy splits come, it really gets fun and interesting! So tell them bass is more fun anyways with less pressure, and even if you want to play snare or tenors, you have to start on an instrument that tends to require less experience and technique.
