Marching Cymbals - help

Hey! I'm going to be marching cymbals this year & I've never done that before. (Our HS line was really small. We we're lucky when we didn't have to borrow players from the horn line - so no cymbals for us.) I need to know anything & everything you all can tell me. Thanx! ~Kerri

Kerri, Are you going to have an instructor to teach you technique? The main thing is to keep the cymbals slightly off from each other and then hit the bottom and then the top in a flam motion. That will get you a good crash sound, but you have to do the movements right in order to get it to sound good. Most importantly, however many cymbal players you have, you'll want to make sure they look and sound the same. There is so much to tell you, but check out my video: http://jeffkozol.com/_wsn/page4.htmlGood luck! Jeff Kozol

WOW!!! That may be the most un-educated answer I have ever heard.
yeah I was about to say something along that line. Cymbal technique takes a while to be comfortable at, I would know because I was the token cymbal player in concert band; I was the only one who could get a great sound out of them. And playing cymbals will get you some gunz.

"And playing cymbals will get you some gunz."
That and you can look freaking scary see Vanguard cymbal line. ALso, if you play with proper technique you get mad bruises. I love it

You know there IS a cymbal forum, right? I bet if you read, you woulda found that one out! Anyways, I'm moving this discussion there, seeing as it fits the topic, ya know? Welcome to DLO and we hope you enjoy your tenure here. To ensure you have a great stay, please chiggidy-check yourself (and the rules) before you riggidy-wreck yourself.
Have a good day! -Cadet311

By the way, if you use proper technique, you should have NO bruises.

Unless you're doing some wacky crazy visual where you spin the cymbals on your arm.
That might leave bruises.
