Hey!
I'm going to be marching cymbals this year & I've never done that before. (Our HS line was really small. We we're lucky when we didn't have to borrow players from the horn line - so no cymbals for us.) I need to know anything & everything you all can tell me.
Thanx!

WOW!!! That may be the most un-educated answer I have ever heard. How do you play snare...I don't know, you just hit the drum. Just read the music and hit the drum. Cymbals are just as hard to play as any other battery instrument.

Honestly, there is a lot that goes into cymbal playing to produce a good sound. Of course there are also multiple sound effects you can create as well. Off the top of my head, I can think of two excellent sources for you. One is a book by Eddie Capps that you can find at www.cymbaltechnique101.com and the other is a video by our own Jeff Kozol that can be found at www.americandrum.com.

If you have access to someone that has field cymbal experience, enlist their help also.

Kerri,

Are you going to have an instructor to teach you technique? The main thing is to keep the cymbals slightly off from each other and then hit the bottom and then the top in a flam motion. That will get you a good crash sound, but you have to do the movements right in order to get it to sound good.

Most importantly, however many cymbal players you have, you'll want to make sure they look and sound the same.

There is so much to tell you, but check out my video:

Good luck!

yeah I was about to say something along that line. Cymbal technique takes a while to be comfortable at, I would know because I was the token cymbal player in concert band; I was the only one who could get a great sound out of them. And playing cymbals will get you some gunz.

That and you can look freaking scary see Vanguard cymbal line. ALso, if you play with proper technique you get mad bruises. I love it

You know there IS a cymbal forum, right?

I bet if you read, you woulda found that one out! Anyways, I'm moving this discussion there, seeing as it fits the topic, ya know?

Welcome to DLO and we hope you enjoy your tenure here. To ensure you have a great stay, please chiggidy-check yourself (and the rules) before you riggidy-wreck yourself.

Have a good day!

By the way, if you use proper technique, you should have NO bruises.

Unless you're doing some wacky crazy visual where you spin the cymbals on your arm.

That might leave bruises.

I believe so, but it also involves a visual standpoint.

Orchestrial crashes sound bigger because they "look" bigger to the eye. They are big, wide, over-the-eyes crashes that just express sound at the audience.

I don't know what you mean by straight or vertical, but I'll mention the power crash (vanguard style)

Power crashes, atleast to me, sound more like impact sounds. They're powerful, and essentially you're smashing the cymbals together with a lot of force.

Agreed.

The best solution for this would be to leave such advanced skills to trained professionals.

You know, like the people that did the drumline movie.

Seriously though, I'm with Jeff- proper technique should leave little or no battle damage. Everyone is going to slip or miss now and then, but that happens with any percussion instrument. I've busted a knuckle or two on spocks and bass rims, taken a few welts from cymbals and even watched an unfortunate soul suffer at the hands of a poorly made whipcrack in a wind ensemble once (talk about blood everywhere!).

Excuse me, Mr., but I did visuals like that when I was in HS! A full four years before Drumline! A thank you very much.

But, yeah, if you're doing it right, you won't be in a world of hurt.

Speaking of, I had my left ringer finger smashed half way through thanks to a cymbal. Not mine. The kids next to me. He flared out on a flip-down, and the cymbal went THROUGH my nail and got about half way through my actual finger. You wanna see blood everywhere? I'll find a picture of my cymbal just after it happened. Like thick red spider webs.

Note: This was a WEEK before the Ohio/WGI prelims trip. Yeah. Imagine how that felt to perform without a finger brace. I was dying.

Are you still going to therapy for it? Haha.

Hey Font- You took a big chance by marching with your finger like that, did it ever heal properly?

A lot of people that try to tough out injuries make them worse.

I thought I heard bees . . .

And, it healed properly. There's a nice little white line under my nail where the cymbal impacted. when it first happened, it bled for six straight days. After a month and a half (in fact, at a Kiwanis camp after showering), the front of my nail finally came off. I faced infection throughout at the time almost daily. After it all grew back, there was a section of nail that wouldn't stick the skin, but finally it's totally healed and normal looking.

you get bruises is by choaking the wrong way

when it comes to visuals...thats dif.if it calls for it... bruise on!
