Is this guy very famous in the world of Pipe drumming? I ran across his video on YouTube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=2RzQMT1lt1E). Does anyone have an idea of how to get the double stroke roll, with one hand, faster like he does in the video? I have tried it, but it is tough!

Jim has been around in the pipe drumming world for some time. Very cool man and he knows his stuff extremely well. As far as getting the two finger roll down, practice is slow but with pretty good stick heights. That way when you do it faster you have some room for your heights to come down for the speed.

And not to make it sound worse but when he speeds up he isn't doing the momma-dadda roll anymore. He switched to a paradiddle sticking. Its an edit in the video that makes you think he is still doing the RRLL sticking but there is a few minutes cut out where he switched to a RLRRLRLL sticking.

Hey Cav89,

Not to sound too harsh, but I was a student of Jim's for a while, and he does not switch to paradiddle sticking in the speeding up of the roll. This exercise is very, very common for warmups in the world's best pipe band drum corps. The only difference is that you have roughly 7-10 playing it instead of 1 drummer.
But it is still RRLLRRLL sticking all the way to the end.

Thanks guys!
Tyler

Got to love this stuff. Its not DCI but these lads can play. I would be willing to bet many of the best DCI sanre players could not hang with some of the stuff these lads are playing.

He's probably the best pipe band snare drummer alive - he's won an insane amount of World Solo titles, and his drum corps - Shotts and Dykehead - has been pretty consistently in the top 3 for decades now.

Jim is a great guy! His 11 (something like that) consecutive Professional Individual Snare Drum Championships will stand for while and he has definitely had an impact on rudimenatl drumming in General. With Jim drumming doesn't stop with Pipe band, he has an appreciation for everything!

Wish I could have seen him at PASIC!!

He is a great player. No one quite does it like he does. When I think of pipe band, Kilpatrick and Duthart come to mind. He has some crazy YouTube videos. Check them out!!!!

My bad. I must have been up way to late when I watched that. I don't even understand what I posted. But I was incorrect in my post about the sticking. Thanks for catching that for me.

One of his sickest videos on YouTube is http://youtube.com/watch?v=yPmhr_0vykA . He takes the Buddy Rich-style stick click to whole new level that I have never seen before. And then in this other video http://youtube.com/watch?v=IYT77qnPqcI he gets his singles as fast as I have seen some guys who do World'd Fastest Drummer (WFD). Any ideas about how to do that stick trick or get singles that fast?
