#124183 - 11/22/06 01:12 PM Nice way to end a solo...

I think this is by far the coolest way to end a solo... It's gonna be hard to explain but I think I can put it in words. Also this is more inclined to Tenors because of the sticks being held in a matched position, but you can pull this off being a snare though as well...

STEP 1 - Hold sticks in matched position, throw the right stick over to your left hand, making it spin clock-wise (horizontally) 1 time.

STEP 2 - While the other stick is in the air spinning, grab the other stick by the tip and pull it over to where the stick is being held matched, (except it's backwards). ((While grabbing the stick by the tip, you should look like a butler holding a towel...))

STEP 3 - Catch the stick that you threw in your now empty left hand, Your hand should look like your holding the left side of an x-box controller before you catch it.

STEP 4 - While you catch the thrown stick, flip the stick in your right hand half way around. Your sticks are now back in a matched position and you can now give that final quadruple forte quarter note...

This trick is VERY fun and can be tweaked slightly to be able to play eigth notes while doing it... Please post all comments...

May I just say that is really fun to do while having a 30 inch bass. Have no clue why it just is.

A video would be helpful to explain that lol

The only reason i know what you mean is that our drumline instructor at a summer camp taught us that same visual.

I played something once on a marching snare, I can't remember what. But I had to figure out and ending for it fast. These people had never seen me play, so I had to show them what I had. At the very end of the last measure, I do a rimshot with my right hand, and do a behind the back stick catch with it right after that. While I'm doing that, I'm leaning forward, with my left stick point directly at the group watching.

They think I rock now. I'm just glad they have no idea that there are SO many people out there that could school me.

Some of the ways I end a solo:
1)Pop the leg and jump back slightly with a double shot.
2)Jumping into a double shot. (Refer to Blast)
3)An unexpected ping and the very end.
4)Some fancy visuals that make everyone think I'm "AMAZING!"
5)Staredown.....nuff said.

It should be really weird and agressive. Like that snaresolo video where the guy gets the stick stuck in the ceiling. Unless you can do the stick juggle in like 1 second, i think it might be too passive

Actually it sounds really cool coming from 16th/32nd note run into an quarter note triplet feel with the stick toss.

Personally, my favorite ending consists of laying the left stick down in a cross shot position and then smacking it away (in an uppercut motion) with the right stick.

our bass line ends our one solo by doing a sideways punch with our left hand towards the audience and then flipping our mallet up side down (backwards) and then dropping it and then catching it with that same hand , its sorta like a sucicide but not completely behind the back its just out to the side when we drop the mallet

hmmm isn't this one of the tosses taught on one of snarescience's vids?

Basically you just throw the stick in your right hand such that it spins one revolution, after which take, and I do mean just take, the stick from your left hand (you would have the butt facing out at this point), then have your left hand catch the airborne stick, and you should end up with bead facing out on left hand, and butt facing out on right hand.

then you just play something on your left hand to buy time to flip the stick in your right hand back where the bead is facing out.

I wrote a pretty visual-oriented snare feature for a James Bond song we might do for our show, and it ends with a triple-backstick sort of visual that I made up, then a right hand rim shot with the left in traditional doing a gun visual.

i saw an I&E solo a little while ago where the guy finished where he smashed his left stick into the drum and took his right, hit it way off into the audience or the ceiling or something (hahaha)
here it is, http://youtube.com/watch?v=GnYJBYeQ_6Q
and one of the most common, double shot, arms to the side, loud vocal grunt. lets people know that you are done

this year in winterline there were individual solo sections in this one song and the quads and basses ended their solos with visuals.

the quads blew kisses to the audience and the basses did a little running man thing

I loved the DCI show where they did I scatter drill and every so often stopped to turn and blast one note then keep scattering. I don't know why that reminded me of it, but it was cool.

I know a guy who did that after his snare I&E in high school, in 2001 I think. He finished playing and just speared the sticks through the head. One of the judges, I believe it was Mark Thurston, actually gave him a penalty for it. I can't remember the exact reasoning, something along the lines of "unsportsmanlike conduct."
