does yor line or pit have any traditions? like the blue devils (i think) has this one old mallet from like the 70's and you have to play with it and then stick it in another persons bag and they pass it on, and so on and so on. our school has one when on the last day of band camp the pit wears a cape. im sure other bands have better ones

Our tenor section either goes to Kona Grill, P.F. Chang's, or any sushi/chinese food place out there.

There's a big festival that my band hosts every year in which it is the idea that every band in the county comes. We have like 15 high schools in my county. That is a tradition in itself but in the drumline, we have a half tradition, half initiation thing that we do. We are the last band to go and we warm up behind the school in between the scholl and some woods. It is pretty much completely dark there. The freshmen or newbies have to go in the woods and "relieve" themselves before we warm up...that is unless you're a girl. It's always fun.

We have two hats and a cape that get passed around all season. There's a bright orange hunting beanie, a russian "communist army" hat (someone's grandparents got it when they went to Russia), and some cape they found it the band hall. Everyone ends up wearing all of them at least once during the season.

wo have a handshake that we do before all competitions. it goes back to when the competitive drumline was just formed and the guys in the snareline decided to make fun of people in gangs and have a gang handshake...their gang color was kahki.
Those guys are still around teaching us.

on the last day of band camp, a junior wears this thing called the banna suit. it doesnt leave much to the imagination, but is really funny to see the freshmen amazed as to how someone would do something like that.

we also have a bag of twizzlers that gets passed around before and after a game.....i never knew i liked twizzlers untill then.

Before competitions and football games, we find the nearest men's bathroom and "beat it in the bathroom." After every warm-up we play, a freshman has to flush a toilet. Before B-ball games we go outside, warm up, and then we run around a lamp post hitting it with our sticks. (We claimed that lamp post to be ours.) lol. We also name our helmets every year. Friday after school (when there is a b-ball game) we all go out to eat at Taco Bell. Those are just a few....

Are you allowed to play during the actual games or only during tha half? Our line doesnt play at basketball games, but I think that needs to change.

We try to have nic-names for all our members. It is pretty awesome.

On birthdays we sing/play happy birthday to the person as cheesy as we can. Then we all do push-ups equal to how old they are.

Also in winter line the tenors have had a secret spot that we use for sectionals for I don't know how long. The previous tenors always pass it down to the new ones and only the tenor players know where it is.

We play a half time show and when there is a time-out. Were not allowed to play during the game because the coaches complain that we are too loud and that the players can't concentrate. Why don't you play at b-ball games?

Theres another two that we just started a bit ago...

1. we play "stalker" (stick soccer with the freshmen drumsticks)
and
2. We take broken sticks and glue them perfectly together and let the freshmen borrow them. They break after about 3 or 4 hits.

I'm seeing some really horrendous traditions right now. You need to start considering what you're doing to the band or in the post above, the freshmen. All I'll say is you better think about dropping some of these because they may be fun for you but it definitely hurts others.

My high school line always shared a bag of peanuts during warmup at our competitions. We would stand in a circle to hide our peanuts from all other bands warming up. All of the shells would be left in a pile in the middle of the circle. Our percussion instructor reported back to us a conversation one day between some of the bands in the class above us that always saw our leavings. The peanut piles became a natural anomoly. Also before all competitions and games we made "stick love". Every member of the line had to rub sticks with all other members. The more sensual the rubbing the better if you catch my drift. Our instructor condoned and encouraged both of these "rituals". The one our instructor hated was a song that we sang on the way to all performances and from well done performances. The song wasn't suggestive, it was blatently absurd.

yeah we have a 'drum circle' b4 every competition. it gets us in the mood.... its a big like huddle-ish lookin thing and we all pick a tone and beat and 'talk dirty drum' lol.... our drum instructors never participate but they watch and think its funny! so yeah our other tradition is to sign a ceiling tile in our band room... one of our tenor players started it and every year the seniors get to sign the tile! cant wait til i get to sign it! yessss! but the tile is def only a drumline thing the band saw it and wants to sign it but hell no they rnt cool enuf 4 that!

Traditions...hmm.. Well, we do have a stick from about 6 or 7 years ago that one of our former bass players had used and we hold it in the air huddle around it. We then proceed with our drumline song. Everyone in the band knows about it but only we know the words. It's basically a sacred stick that sits underneath a shed the whole time. I don't even know if it is still there.

Number 2: That one would be funny, but it WOULD be horrendous if you did right before a competition. I can just imagine a freshman snare kid just being like..."WTF just happened to my stick..." after it broke when he or she hit the stick for the third or fourth time.

The first day of band camp the upperclassmen wake up the freshmen at 4 a.m. and we go to Denny's for breakfast. It's really fun. Hmm, what else. Oh, before every home game we have a party where we hang out and eat, and the upperclassmen give rides to the freshmen. And then for every away game the percussion parents pack dinners for the ride to the game. And I started one this year, every time our team wins a game, we sing Bohemian Rhapsody on the way back.

The most important one I found was that the Freshmen are not allowed to hack/add anything to any of our music. I was lucky enough though that the guys heard me playing Latin Lover, and they decided that I could hack to cadences and taps.

We argue about the point of singing Bohemian Rhapsody after a win. I just tell them we don't need a reason to sing the coolest song in the world.

We started a new thing this last season. So right after our pre-game/show/comp warmup we circle up, then in total silence think of one thing that you've been messing up and make sure you get it right that night, lock arms, sway from side to side, then we each get a couple sunflower seeds and hold them in our mouths all the way onto the field. Once we step on the field we chew. Then just as the crowd starts to go silent, we spit them out on the field.

The circling part is unecesary... but I like the sunflower seeds.

Another funny thing we did at the very end of the season when we finaly got the xL carriers was march onto the field with traditional tilted drums, then when we spit out the seeds, tilt the drums back to level.

I almost forgot about the All Mighty Percussion Marble too. So about 5-6 years ago a previous section leader had a marble. She took it to a trophy shop and had this little trophy made that held the marble at the top. Its blue and orange (school colors) and says "The Amos Alanzo Stagg Percussion Marble" on it. Every section leader when they graduate must give it to someone under them. I was fortunate to get it from our section leader last year Alysa. I was a sophmore so I have it this year, and next year. I think I know already who I'm gunna give it to when I leave, but we still have the freshmans next year.

we usually bleach our hair (as everyone knows) but decided not to this year. we wanted to be known for our playing ability, not our looks. we also have what we call "boxer fridays" were we take off our shorts during rehearsal and bear the "non-dark side of the force". we also do a number of other things that are just between us BA guys, so i'll leave it at that.

This one is half tradition and half initiation. It's been around for 7 years.
When any guy joins the line, he must touch his crotch to the 28" bass and the section leader hits the opposite side as hard as possible.
It hurts like hell o.o

my high school line used to make all the freashmen sniff pixi-sticks on the bus on the way to our biggest show of the fall season. it sucked because after being in the heat all day everyone would have huge head aches going home. i don't think they do it anymore though. i never liked that one very much...

It not really a tradition but at the football games most of the seniors(the black) stand up for the whole game it sort of dumb.

Our number one tradition that never fails... the drumline acts stupid at the worst time possible.

Another one, the percussion always brings home the hardware even after being a bunch of jack#%s's during every rehersal (hornline doesn't and still B*%ch at the drums )

At the end of each band camp we have a cookout for all of the band members and their families at the school. After dinner we perform all that we have learned during band camp.

no one wanted to eat lunch next to that guy/or girl.
we had a few stupid hat days in FE that year and some stupid bus things but i cant really talk about that
