Hey fellow drumline members! Is there a way for the pit to march with the rest of the drumline? I'm sick of staying in one place! I wanna march timpani! Do they make marching pit percussion?

There used to be marching tympani, however when corps started becoming more concerned with better sound quality and symphonic techniques, the use of marching tymps ended. I believe it was sometime around the late 70's-early 80's.

The marching tymps were made out of fiberglass and didn't sound very good.

I know of some parade groups that march bells, but generally the pit equipment gets left behind. The Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps usually has a guy that marches out with a 3 octave xylo or marimba, but he parks near the front sideline for most, if not all of the show.

We can march xylos and bells but we don't... I think it's a little too hard to do them because usually you move around the keyboard to play certain passages and to not be able to move would make it hard.

The high school I graduated from still marches a set of bells for parades. Pointless though seeing how badly they are drowned out by the rest of the drumline, muahahahaha! <img src="/threads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

HEY not if I'm playing them. lol this year when I played bells in the competition drumline, pretty much one of the songs I had the melody through the whole thing and everyone could hear me all the time, even when the whole drumline was playing fortissimo. The mallets look like they got remolded though... It's how loud he wanted me to play...

I always thought that marching pit percussion just looked tacky. Maybe it is just because I am so used to pit not marching. I have seen many schools do it though.

uhm the only way of not staying in one place is to just move your instruments around...i remeber seeing a couple of shows do it before but they had to move quickly and for the pit bells that are on stands they had to pick them up stands and all and move..but they fo have bell harness for the bells.

Our pit will march with us during warmup so they can keep their marching skills up if they ever try out for drumline. But I would be glad the pit doesn't actually march. They would be some serioud weight you would be carrying around. Can you say serious back pain.
