i was wondering if you guys had rules for a troubled line, I've come up with some for ours as the BD asked here they are

Rule 1 No stupidity or horseplay will be tolerated During Band Rehearsal time.

Rule 2 We will not show anything less than professionalism

Rule 3 if you drop concert band (without good reason) and are on bass do not expect a snare/tenor spot in next years marching season

Rule 4 if you are a snare and drop concert band do not whine if you don't get snare the next year

Rule 5 we will move from rehearsal zone to rehearsal zone in an orderly fashion

Rule 6 Superior is not an option it is a privilege and must be earned

Rule 7 missing practices is not tolerated

Rule 8 breaking one of the above rules results in laps/push ups

Rule 9 being on time is a must

Rule 10 Your responsible for your own equipment, do not tear up carriers or purposefully damage our instruments, these things cost money.

Rule 11 Do not talk while the director is speaking or while standing at attention

Rule 12 Do not break attention

Rule 13 Do not take off your instrument unless granted permission

Rule 14 don't suck

i was wondering also if these are too harsh?

1, 2, and 5 are a little questionable. Everthing else looks ok.

I like rules 1, 2, and 5. That's the kind of thing that takes a HS line to another level. You can goof off a little in sectionals, but ensemble time is the time to be serious.

I'd also add something about being responsible for your own equipment.

Those are some good rules.

I do have a problem with rules 4 and 5. Where I teach, marching band is an extra curricular activity. Half my line is not in the music program at the school other than for marching band. The percussion program in our district is not that strong, the High school band director also runs the middle school band and teaches at 2 of the elementary schools. He is a low brass player with very little percussion background. Not that he isn't a good teacher, he has more than doubled the size of our band since he started at the district a few years ago. I have petitioned the school board on many occasions for a full time percussion instructor for the district but nothing every comes of it.

The students in my line are motivated and want to be there. If they practice, show me that they want to play, and are willing to put forth the effort required for an instrument, I have no problem giving them a spot on the line.

Shouldn't #8 be at the bottom?

rule 4 is because we only have so many snares to be issued, and im not sure if we can order new ones yet . . .

My bad, I meant rules 3 & 4 not 4 & 5.
