at your school, what seem to be the pit instruments that everyone inside (and out) of the pit have respect for or would want to play?
the two big ones are timpani and chimes.
chimes seem to cut through the entire band, and timpani is a lot of fun to play.

i dont usually enjoy drumkits in pits, but i suppose it is a manly instrument.
as for triangle, i think it takes a lot of courage to play!
every second movement key poulan has ever written ends with a triangle hit after a measure or so. if you arent paying attention you make the band look stupid!

The marimba, although the audience has a hard time hearing it, is the coolest thing in the pit. It takes the most skill if played correctly than any other instrument in the pit. But the marimba is just next too the timps because they take snugglebunny of skill and technique as well to play correctly.

I did that for the city Christmas parade last year. No joke.

My director just wanted a four measure triangle "solo" in the closer of last year's show, and we never actually played it in competition because no one could get the choke pattern right at the time.

The marimba is one of the loudest instruments in the pit not counting the electronices. A guy who can play with good technique on a marimba and are good and not ashamed of it, is something that I think is amazing. In my area of bands, you don't see many male marimba players. But when you do, the change is kind of nice.

Marimba gets my vote, just because of the proficiency level required.

Now a marimba player that backs away for one sternum cracking smash? That is a man baby!

I am not a big fan on sets in front ensembles during marching season. Indoor season maybe, but full band marching season I don't like. Still sticking with the marimba.

The "rock pod" hands down. I would have loved to have been the guy who was in the pod with '85-'86 Devs. Coolest pit part ever.

If I couldn't do that I would play vibes. I'd give anything to be a great, jammin' vibe guy.

The guy who hits all the china and splash chokes in the Cadets 2000 show. That's the best.

Aux percussion- Bass and Gong, cymbal and tom rack, brake drum, timbale, and all the other fun doodads that go on the traps stand... definitely the manliest and most fun!

I think the guys thats ends up jumping around the most is the person I respect the most. It's more of a challenge to do twenty things at once than just one marimba (which is why vibes > marimba, pedaling and flat bars), so the the guy with the cymbals and toms and other things, yeah I respect that guy (or girl) most.

Definetely Marimba, cause if you have a "good" percussionist, who can play the marimba well, and a show with an amazing mallet solo with four mallets, it just makes the audiences jaws drop, and isn't that what we are all going for.

Honestly, I think the player makes the instrument manly, not the other way around.
Also if your normal dynamic of forte
can be heard over the band, without microphones,
I think that instrument is manly.

Bass drum and gong/tam tam played together is an example, as explained before.

A strong marimba player can make the marimba a beast.
Same applies for vibraphone and xylophone players.

If the player is strong enough, he could probably make an Ibo drum in the pit, manly.
That's my take.

The manliest thing would have to be the gong or the bass drum because you get to hit those hard, but since I'm a mallet percussion freak as well as a tenor freak, I'm gonna say the xylophone
