I have my snareline tape the sticks full all the way from taper to butt. This is to keep hand sweat from logging the stick and subtrating from the good original sound quality. We try to minimize tape overlap as much as possible, so as not to add too much weight to any part of the stick.

But wouldn't the tape covering that much of the stick, hinder the resonation of the stick, thus hindering the original sound of the stick?

My line taped 3" from the bead, to the bead.

I highly doubt it.

When you tape up to the fulcrum you add weight to the front.

Sticks aren't made with weight in the front.

I would think taping it all the way down seems more logical to not "hindering" the original sound quality.

Our drumline tapes snare and tenor stick to about the fulcrum with it pretty much overlapped. That's the way I was taught, and that's the way that we are told to do it.

i tape all sticks to the point that if i were to hold it in a left handed traditional grip, my ring finger would be just barely in contact with the tape.
then i scratch off the finish all along where my hand contacts the stick. i usually use a hunting knife for that.
i have sweaty hands so i really need the direct grip
and the tape is just to add a little heft and keep the stick from breaking as fast

My line tapes the whole stick and its just not the snares that do it our quads and basses do it as well. We do it to match and to make our sticks not look as beat up.

My line does the same.

Most of the guys on our 'line tape up until the fulcrum, a space, a little bit on the back end. But because our center snare tapes all the way, we all have to as well. I'd rather just leave a space for my fulcrum cause my hands sweat a lot and it's just easier that way.

I tape the snares scott johnsons from the bead to the flag and then the "C" in his sig to the butt. I tape up the butt side more to give it more of a counter weight. our tenors dont tape. our bass tape from the tip to just above their hands.

yeah... I tape the whole stick...

you just need to use the stick and it will have the same grip as every other wood stick

For soudn purposes, i hate taping sticks. I think (just in my opinion) that it makes rim shots softer, and makes the sticks heavier making the snares soud lower. Though, to preserve having to go buy a new pair of sticks every month, we take the tips to about to where the end of the Vic Firth name is. Then we tape from the bottom up to where the fulcrum is. We added a notch of tape this year at the fulcrom to prevent slipping? It works out well, it just adds more blk to the stick.

At school we leave room for the fulcrum. At home I have pairs that are half-taped, full taped, and fulcrum spaced.
