Tenor player's drums closest to camera falls right off on the last hit of an encore performance!

Anybody else have a hardware malfunction during a performance?

Hahaha, wow. That was awesome.

No, I've never had a hardware malfunction during a performace. The only thing close would be my sticks being the wrong way in the stick bag during a stick change.

I've never had a drum accident, but when I was marching trombone one time, a weld broke where the mouthpiece is and when i was pullin my slide back, the mouthpiece came out and hit me in the face, and busted my lip...

My sophomore year of high school one of the others snare players was marching forward and the snare just completely fell of the harness and rolled around.
Pretty funny at least.

Anyone who's been around the activity long enough has probably seen some pretty good hardware failures. The Cavalier one might be the most entertaining I've ever seen, though.

A corps I was in had a kinda similar hardware failure during a show once. A j-hook receiver snapped off one of the tenors. Since only one of them broke, the drums spun around on the harness kind of like the Aimachi spinning tenor stand thing. It might've been a really cool visual if it didn't nearly fling the tenor player to the ground! He managed to stay (mostly) upright and get off the field safely. Thankfully he was close to the front sideline at the time.

The same thing happened to us at WGI prelims in 02 when a quad player got caught up in the floor. The rig swung around so fast the poor guy was helpless. More than one person went down and we never recovered enough to save our spot at finals.

For the record, the hardware that failed was mid 90's Premier stuff.

Ours was early 90s Yamaha, but the backbar & harness were 80s Ludwig. (Yamaha's pre-RM tenor hardware was awful, so it was common to retrofit Ludwig-style parts at the time.)

None for me that I can remember.

I remember at WGI 06, seeing a group playing some sort of prayer or faith-based show. West Athens, I THINK. Well, their third bass, a really young looking kid, was running around, performing, all that . . . Next thing I know, the kid is on his back, and the bass drum rolls over his face and unhinges from the hook latches. Poor dude's laying on ground, crying, for like six or eight seconds. Finally he gets up, puts his drum on, and finishes the show.

Ballsy little bastard he is.

Haha, I've never had them just fall off, but I fell once and my snare kind o just rolled down the street a little bit. Itwas pretty funny, but I've never had any hardware malfunction. I know that they use different harnesses than other corps. Most people, schools, corps I know use May. Theyyyy don't use that.

Last season one of our snare players had to meet us separately at a competition because she had volleyball practice so we had to load her stuff for her. Turns out we ended up forgetting her carrier so we had to borrow one from another school. During the middle of the show she was marching backwards and the whole drum and part of the carrier just fell off. I think she was in shock cause she just sort of stood there till are section leader told her to run and grab it. So now everyone thinks the other school sabotaged us.

I hate fricking jbars. Its our exhibition last year. Pearl Championship tenors (older models so they are heavy) we rigged them for an extra spock, but couldnt fold them. Get done with on field warm up and im like man this rig feels bouncier tonight. Look down and my jbar is cracking on the upper part. I march on my toes the entire show to avoid it breaking to to the end up of the drum break at the end, pound the crap out of it, and luckily catch it in time that noone noticed. Get off the field and ditch it. On that last his it sheared right off. There are drum gods......apparently they arent with the cav's.

The Cavalier tenor player's rig didn't shear -- he just hyped so hard that his j-hooks slipped out of their receivers. Watch it again carefully and see how he lifts his whole body to come down on that final note. When his body comes down faster than the drums, the hooks came out. He actually picks the drums back up and finishes the show.

As for those drum gods you speak of... I think they were with the Cavaliers. This video is from their encore after winning DCI!

Nothing in the middle of a show, but before festival a screw came out and the whole right half of my tenors just came off, we got it fixed before thankfully, but it still freaked me out a little.

That wasn't the first time that happened either =[, but we did get new equipment, hopefully it won't happen again.

Whether your drums are new or old, you'll need to keep on top of maintenance so stuff like that doesn't happen. Just like you tune the heads every so often (you do, don't you?), you should be checking the screws, nuts, and bolts that hold the drums together.

A similar thing happened to a snare one day at rehearsals last year. We were in an arc to warm up, and his snare (luckily not a new drum, but an old fixed-up Remo Legato from many years ago) just fell off and hit the cement. Our drum instructor was kinda ticked. Obviously it was the j-bars, which he didn't tighten enough when he adjusted the harness to fit the drum.

I tech drums relentlessly and stuff still breaks. It doesnt matter what you do stuff is going to break on older drums, your just prolong the life of older drums a few days at a time.

This happened to a snare player in my high school line my sophomore year. We hadn't finished the drill of our show so during the thrid movement when we didn't have any more drill we held the rest of the show... and as we get there, the end snare's drum (a Pearl championship snare in relatively decent shape) falls off his harness right in front of the judge.

The best part was the judges reaction though... he was one of them old-timer guys and his eyes just got really wide and he said "whoops" on the tape.

This wasn't really on the field or anything, but after one of the the pregame shows at a football game, we were going into the bleachers and our freshman snare player acidently kicked our other snare's drum while waking up them and it fell of. It wasn't all his falt though because she never locks her drum and she has troubble climbing and moving with her snare on. She is only like 5'.....

ahhh! i remember that! ouchhh

however my incident was that something was loose on my snare (i dont remember what) and it began to fall but at an angle, (tilting to the left side) luckily i was able to just hold it up a bit since my left hand wasnt doing much during that part, but i was able to make a quick fix during a short amount of rests

its bad because i adjusted my "set" stance to my tilted snare, and now every audition i go to they are like FIX UR STANCE. jose, the snare tech from VK, reeeally went up my arsenal about that.

my freshman year during an indoor practice i had this incredibly difficult backward marching set around the pit, and my steps were the incorrect size. so the top bass ended up stepping on my feet, sending me over in a backflip, my drum unhooked and smacked me in the face and the j-bar post stabbed into my leg.
i mananged to roll out of the way before she fell too... but man that hurt more than any other fall i had ever had.
all because of the malfunction of being hit in the face

another one...
during first period band the other day. our gong is held to the stand by a shoe string (cheap stuff... we have nylon rope for our marimbas) and someome bumped the stand and our brand new gong hit the ground. not happy band director

Well, if the band director is dumb enough to allow the gong to be out where it can be touched while being held by shoestring, then I don't think he has a right to be angry at anyone but himself there.

Yea back in high school i used to play Trombone, and i remember during a parade one time my old trigger trombone that they had me using .. well the trigger assembly came apart and one of the little screws fell to the ground. i quickly stopped and picked it up because there was no way anyone would have seen it but me, then after almost getting clocked in the head by the tenors i ran back into line.. was great lol

I think my story is probably the worst.
My line uses the heaviest drums ever: Dynasty.
We have 25lbs snares and 45lbs tenors(double spock).
So we're running through our show out on the field, marching and stuff. I was playing tenors there's a snare next to me. Well, one of her J-bars fell off and the weight was too much for the second so the whole thing dropped. Well I was crab stepping and I tripped on it, fell backwards, and my 45 pound tenors come straight off the carrier and catch me right in the nose. So I went to the hospital to get 4 stitches IN MY NOSE. And it turns out that that little freshman tried to make her carrier lower and loosened the J-bars to lower it and didn't tighten them back enough. So we made sure she never messed with a carrier again.

Dynasty drums are lighter compared to other brands... and the drums weigh 35, not 45, even with the carrier.

But that sounds awful... man 4 stitches because of a band accident, that's horrible.

Actually, they are heavier than Pearl & Yamaha drums, but not by a huge amount. The heaviest available Dynasty tenor set (6-8-10-12-13-14) weighs 35.6 pounds, or about 4 pounds heavier than a 6-drum Pearl Championship setup (6-6-10-12-13-14). Dynasty snares are also just a little bit heavier, weighing 18 pounds compared to 16 & change for Pearl & Yamaha.

one of the shoulder things on my harness came loose and I marched around like an idiot, supporting my drum with one harness side. I managed to stay balanced as well. I was literally sideways, and it was pretty funny watching me try to hold my drum, fix the harness, play and march at the same time.

Oops I meant to put 20 lbs snares. They're about 20. I'm OCD so I hate using numbers that aren't divisible by 5 or 10. And our directorsaid with the cradle it's around 40 or 45. But they're still pretty damn heavy.

Last summer when I was marching with the Mississippi Lions All-State Band. We were doing an open rehearsal for the little town of Ellisville, MS. It came to a mesh drill between the battery and the trombones and baritones. Well, my lane was cut short because trombones were in the way and they weren't moving out of the way. I slammed right into them and my drum came off of the carrier and hit the bottom of my shin and hit the concrete. Note that these were new black pearls...I had to catch my drum from rolling down hill, and continue with the run through. Afterwards we stopped and made sure the instrument was fine and make sure I didn't have a broken leg, which luckily I didn't...fun times...
Oh yeah, and I remember when that guys tenors fell off...I was sitting on the 50 on about the 10th or so row..I felt bad for that guy...It took him a set or two to get 'em back on.

one of our snare players (section leader) forgot to bring his snare to contest one time so we put him in a sling and said he had just broke his arm earlier that day.
also; a tenor player was running to set one time, fell down and managed to scrape almost and inch of the bottom of the shells. all anyone cared about was if the drums were ok.

I've seen plenty of players forget carriers (mostly basses for some reason) to games. Gotta try to cut your losses and tell him to look good on the field.

just before christmas parade, just before linign up, middle bassdrummer cracked the bottom of his harness, and it was stickin him all of 2 miles, and my trombone broke... kinda, and finally at, "MEET THE JACKETS" the center snare, while tapping off the feild, broke a stick, and it went flying like 4 feet to the side

I've heard horror stories of snare players snapping sticks on the rim and having them fly off into the hornline.

Breaking sticks happened my freshmen year of high school. A bass drum player broke a mallet during a practice, and a snare player also broke a stick during the song "Tide Is High".

we broke 1 stick warming up before a game and then another marching in on the same night. both were bass sticks.

also if i remember right a snare broke a stick into 3 pieces in the stands and our tenor player at the time busted a head or two

lol wow.. was that the end of the show or was there more? that would be so embarrassing if that happened to me in a show, i wouldnt know what to do. hahah. i've never had something like that happen before and i hope it never does happen. the closest to a malfunction like that was when my carrier broke and my drum almost fell right before a performance. lluckily, someone had an extra carrier nearby that i could use.
