Last season one of our snare players had to meet us separately at a competition because she had volleyball practice so we had to load her stuff for her. Turns out we ended up forgetting her carrier so we had to borrow one from another school. During the middle of the show she was marching backwards and the whole drum and part of the carrier just fell off. I think she was in shock cause she just sort of stood there till are section leader told her to run and grab it. So now everyone thinks the other school sabotaged us.

I hate fricking jbars. Its our exhibition last year. Pearl Championship tenors (older models so they are heavy) we rigged them for an extra spock, but couldnt fold them. Get done with on field warm up and im like man this rig feels bouncier tonight. Look down and my jbar is cracking on the upper part. I march on my toes the entire show to avoid it breaking to to the end up of the drum break at the end, pound the crap out of it, and luckily catch it in time that noone noticed. Get off the field and ditch it. On that last his it sheared right off. There are drum gods......apparently they arent with the cav's.

The Cavalier tenor player's rig didn't shear -- he just hyped so hard that his j-hooks slipped out of their receivers. Watch it again carefully and see how he lifts his whole body to come down on that final note. When his body comes down faster than the drums, the hooks came out. He actually picks the drums back up and finishes the show.

As for those drum gods you speak of... I think they were with the Cavaliers. This video is from their encore after winning DCI!

Nothing in the middle of a show, but before festival a screw came out and the whole right half of my tenors just came off, we got it fixed before thankfully, but it still freaked me out a little.

That wasn't the first time that happened either =[, but we did get new equipment, hopefully it won't happen again.

Whether your drums are new or old, you'll need to keep on top of maintenance so stuff like that doesn't happen. Just like you tune the heads every so often (you do, don't you?), you should be checking the screws, nuts, and bolts that hold the drums together.

Last year, at band camp, we were marching the first few pages of our opener when my drum captain's drum just fell completely off the harness. Poor guy got blamed for it, but it was still funny as heck.

A similar thing happened to a snare one day at rehearsals last year. We were in an arc to warm up, and his snare (luckily not a new drum, but an old fixed-up Remo Legato from many years ago) just fell off and hit the cement. Our drum instructor was kinda ticked. Obviously it was the j-bars, which he didn't tighten enough when he adjusted the harness to fit the drum.

the whole season i was/am marching with a slightly slanted snare because of a broken harness.

I tech drums relentlessly and stuff still breaks. It doesnt matter what you do stuff is going to break on older drums, your just prolong the life of older drums a few days at a time.
