Because it makes me feel tough... like a Fighter Pilot. Snares are the best of all. Everyone aspires to play snare at some point. (The snare drummers all secretly want to play tenors though) So yeah, it's an ego trip mostly. I love a clean triplet roll more than anything too.

I wanted to play snare in the beginning because they seem to capture your attention. Not just because there tends to be more of them and the voicing is higher, but because of an attitude that seems to be carried by them. Now, I play because I love traditional grip. Tenors are a lot of fun, and almost nothing beats a bassline that's in the pocket. But the feel of playing snare and the ease of the left hand that comes along with traditional just creates a completely different experience (though I'm sure the same can be argued about every instrument).

I play the snare because it makes me feel like the center of attention. Whats more noticeable: the clarinets playing a b flat instead of a b natural...or the snare line not playing together at all? It all goes back to the drumline being ego maniacs:)

WOW! awesome question. Why do i play snare?... I started on tenors and liked it a lot, played bass and hated it (only cause we sucked) then came snare... I put it on and realized that's what i wanted to do. i love rudiments. I love perfection. i love the fact that in order for me to be successful i have to play perfect as it relates to those around me. Don't get me wrong... tenor and bass players have to play clean to but it's diifrent on a snare.
I guess to simplify all this hooplah... Perfecting snare is more fun for me than perfecting bass or tenors.
