This fall will be my third season marching snare and I still don't consider myself a snare drummer. I'm a pianist who likes drums. :P

I like how simple it is because its just one drum, but also how difficult it is because of the articulation.

I play snare because when I started really getting into marching percussion (and all percussion for that matter), I would always watch DCI videos. No matter what corps I watch, the snare line always seems awesome. So I decided I wanted to be one of those guys. Plus the idea of playing such a high level of music with 8 other people is awesome.

Snare requires a greater degree of perfection than tenors because

1. The sound of the snare drum is more articulate, and thus easier to become dirty while the tenor line can get away with a little more.

2. Twice as many people to match as a tenor line.

Tenors make up for it though with the complexity of more drums. Scorpio's got it right (see 3 above, too lazy to use quote feature :D)

I play snare because when I went to high school I was introduced to Marching percussion, but I was put on bass. I soon discovered vicfirth.com and I saw the 06 blue devils....The Snares just caught my attention, So i decided to ask my drum captain how to play traditional, she gave me a quick overview and then I did some research on my own to get used to trad grip. I then bought stick control and played it daily on the black side of my vic pad. I auditioned for snare at my high school but was put on bass....this year i was put on bass again(even though my bd knows i have snare chops) because there was a shortage of bass players....SO i felt cheated out of my rightful spot and I decided to audition for an independent line on snare, and well Here i am playing snare for incognito...One day i will march in the top 3 DCI lines though.

It's always a shame when people are held back because of a lack of bass drummers. That almost happened to me my sophomore year but I pulled through. I'd recommend getting another snare book, I like jeff queen's "the next level"

Its only expensive if you buy the dvd too, but...i recommend that dvd.

I play snare cause the section leader of our drumline is always center snare and I've always wanted to be that guy.
And cause they needed me on snare and not on tenors
(i tried both) because the guy who got tenors wasnt as rudimentally solid as I was.

Plus...the snare is really loud. And i like to be HEARD!
