I play & teach snare so that some of my students can learn how to provide accompaniment for the tenor line.

Seriously, though, I do enjoy playing snare even though I'd consider myself primarily a tenor player. But I have fun playing any drum in the line.

I play snare because im hardcore. sure tenor players cary heavier drums and play on more, but I like the ability to play on one surface and really get into the rudiments and tricks. you have more ability to add body movement with snare and it's usually the center instrument. You have to play cleaner than the other drumline members cause the head is a lot tighter and therefore your note length shorter. I like a challenge and when you can get a 7+ person snare line amazingly clean. It sounds amazing...

but in all seriousness, i just enjoy the way the drum feels and sounds. and i really like spelling with the rudimentary alphabet if you know what i mean.

That's a good question. I don't know why I originally started playing snare, it just 'reached out to me' so to speak. I've played bass and a minimal amount of tenor, but the sound and feel of the snare is still my fav to play.

The sound is just so bad butt in my opinion.

Tenors are definitely more fun. I don't play tenors
but yeah. Another down side though, learning tenor music
would take me FOREVER. Plus, carrying 45 pounds for hours
would kill me.

Also, I guess there's en egotistical side to me that's wants to be in the center of the drumline. And snares have the ability to do tricks and visuals, and I don't think thats vital, but its definitely fun.

let's face it, everyone waits for the snare feature. there's something about seeing 8 people playing exactly the same thing in unison that is amazing. i love the crisp intensity of a clean snareline, and on the other side of that perspective it also makes my blood itch when i hear a dirty snareline

Not quite. I personally don't care if the snare line has a feature or not. If there is one then I will listen to it and then sit with my tenor friends and discuss how the feature would have been much cooler if it was played on six drums by five guys.

I showed up on the first day of band camp at age 14 and was asked randomly to play the snare drum. I've been doing it ever since

I played percussion in middle school band cause it was an easy grade. Then my mom made me try out for drumline cause she was in guard. She kept saying 'if you don't like it you can quit after band camp' To this day I still tell her that's the only thing she's ever been right about.

I think snare is the most streamlined way to get from you to the rhythm. Snares have a basic alphabet of rudimentals, and the amazing this is building a whole brilliant piece of music out of it. There's no split part or six differently tuned drums, it's you, a drum, and two sticks. And the purity of that is something that I think is awesome and inspiring and that's why snares are the best instrument in the band.

xD

Pwn't.

I started playing snare simply by luck. Out of the three of us who were going to play snare, there could only be two, and the drum captain was gaurenteed a spot on the snareline.

It was only by chance that the other kid who was gonna play snare picked the broken drum. ;P

I play it because we need a real leader and better snare next year =P

Played tenors last, and they're more fun to play in the stands and things, but i still love just being able to chop it out on snare, and count offs, etc. =]

Really, tenor music is easier for me to get down quickly, because it seems to go with the music more, i.e. they have different notes. And tbh, I can get in time perfectly with the other snare, and not as well with the other tenor.

They're the coolest drum in the line!!!
Ok, think about this.
You see commercials for the big college games. what's usually being played in the background? The drumline.. Then sometimes they will maybe show a couple shots in, who do they show? The snares!!!
Or for like trailers for some drum DVD, they always show the snare line most of the time.
Snares are always the center of attention. Everything about them is AMAZING!
Wow, I think I went to far with this.. Ok you get my point!

^Thats an interesting take. I think what you can say can be applied to all instruments though

There is nothing better than performing with other good musicians, especially when drummers suck at your high school (which is my case scenario). Thats why i love being in a drum corps, or even just auditioning for one. vibe is so much different when everyone is just straight up good. Nothing is better than playing 8's to bases doing 32nd and sextuplet splits

I'd have to say the visual aspect. With bass drums, you can do tricks, but its mostly just the drop-n-grab since there's a drum in front of you, but then again, you get to split. With snare drumming, there's a clean surface in front of you where you can do any trick layout on the "one" drum you have. You have full accessibility to your right and left, behind and in front. With tenors, you have to hit 6 drums specifically, and putting tricks into that takes time. Plus snare is simpler for freestylin'. Just what I think.

P.S. Clean always = Good

Because it makes me feel tough... like a Fighter Pilot. Snares are the best of all. Everyone aspires to play snare at some point. (The snare drummers all secretly want to play tenors though) So yeah, it's an ego trip mostly. I love a clean triplet roll more than anything too.

I didn't make snare as a freshmen, so I played bass. The center snare showed me vicfirth.com, and I looked around it for a few days. After seeing the Cadets 05 line... ive been working my censored off. Sophmore year I started playing snare, and beat out the 2 vets 4 the solo XD. oh and yes binghamsnare is right... a clean triplet roll sounds amazing.

I wanted to play snare in the beginning because they seem to capture your attention. Not just because there tends to be more of them and the voicing is higher, but because of an attitude that seems to be carried by them. Now, I play because I love traditional grip. Tenors are a lot of fun, and almost nothing beats a bassline that's in the pocket. But the feel of playing snare and the ease of the left hand that comes along with traditional just creates a completely different experience (though I'm sure the same can be argued about every instrument).

I play the snare because it makes me feel like the center of attention. Whats more noticeable: the clarinets playing a b flat instead of a b natural...or the snare line not playing together at all? It all goes back to the drumline being ego maniacs:)

WOW! awesome question. Why do i play snare?... I started on tenors and liked it a lot, played bass and hated it (only cause we sucked) then came snare... I put it on and realized that's what i wanted to do. i love rudiments. I love perfection. i love the fact that in order for me to be successful i have to play perfect as it relates to those around me. Don't get me wrong... tenor and bass players have to play clean to but it's diifrent on a snare.

I guess to simplify all this hooplah... Perfecting snare is more fun for me than perfecting bass or tenors.

I play snare because when I started really getting into marching percussion (and all percussion for that matter), I would always watch DCI videos. No matter what corps I watch, the snare line always seems awesome. So I decided I wanted to be one of those guys. Plus the idea of playing such a high level of music with 8 other people is awesome.

Snare requires a greater degree of perfection than tenors because

1. The sound of the snare drum is more articulate, and thus easier to become dirty while the tenor line can get away with a little more.

2. Twice as many people to match as a tenor line.

Tenors make up for it though with the complexity of more drums. Scorpio's got it right (see 3 above, too lazy to use quote feature :D)

I play snare because when I went to high school I was introduced to Marching percussion, but I was put on bass. I soon discovered vicfirth.com and I saw the 06 blue devils....The Snares just caught my attention, So i decided to ask my drum captain how to play traditional, she gave me a quick overview and then I did some research on my own to get used to trad grip. I then bought stick control and played it daily on the black side of my vic pad. I auditioned for snare at my high school but was put on bass....this year i was put on bass again(even though my bd knows i have snare chops) because there was a shortage of bass players....SO i felt cheated out of my rightful spot and I decided to audition for an independent line on snare, and well Here i am playing snare for incognito...One day i will march in the top 3 DCI lines though.

It's always a shame when people are held back because of a lack of bass drummers. That almost happened to me my sophomore year but I pulled through. I'd recommend getting another snare book, I like jeff queen's "the next level"

Its only expensive if you buy the dvd too, but...i recommend that dvd.

I play snare cause the section leader of our drumline is always center snare and I've always wanted to be that guy.
And cause they needed me on snare and not on tenors
(i tried both) because the guy who got tenors wasnt as rudimentally solid as I was.

Plus...the snare is really loud. And i like to be HEARD!

Ive just always loved the snare, from the sound to the look to the feel. Also because i rather play some cool licks rather than syncapated rythems on a bass. I mean, if i could i would play tenors, but i cant handle most of the music.
