Does anyone know of a visual that you could do on the tenors that isn't while playing anything? We have a break in this song and the music just says "visual".

The list is endless:

"Shooting Star" where the sticks cross in one hand, then the hand crosses the sky above and in front of your head and you "watch" it by visibly turning your head.

"Spear" where you put both sticks in one hand, end to end, and make a stabbing motion with your "spear."

"Cutthroat" where you "slash" your throat with both sticks in one hand, and your head drops realistically as you "die."

Different arm motions... depending on the music, they could be sharp and aggressive, smooth and flowing, split/waves... anything, really.

I beg to differ.

You may not get points docked, but if a judge thinks you have a dumb visual, you'll hear about it.

Like someone (Kyle?) said earlier, just do something that goes along with the style of music.

'Cause if you did something like the robot during a ballad section, it'd look pretty foolish, if ya get what I'm sayin'.

Psh, well i guess i can't speak generally then.

Within reason, and with the tone of music, if you select a visual that correlates to the above said, or if your personal opinion sees that the abortion visual is appropriate for your ballad, then nobody can say you're wrong.

I've heard of one where you make something like a slingshot or bow and arrow with your sticks and pretend to shoot the drum major.

I'm particularly fond of the Coke Snorting visual, but I doubt either of us would get away with it in a high school band.

But yeah, just mess around. Do something that you think fits your music, whether it be quirky, cool, unison, or ripple. It's all imagination.

Make a V with the sticks, reach your hand in, grab the fetus, throw it on the ground.
Most effective if done right before a tap step, only instead of tap-stepping, stomp.

Abortion visual.

Of course not. The abortion visual is a classic. =D i remember the tenor players at a summer camp i went to had some fun with this one. as in eating the fetus instead of throwing it on the ground. nasty, but funny.

First off, SCV's cymbal line does it better than anyone. See my above post.

Secondly, the audience never "gets" the abortion visual. Coke-line visual, for instance, is easy to understand. The aborted fetus thing, on the other hand, is sort of... avant garde? I've always thought it looked more like a someone shooting a slingshot than reaching their hand... well... yeah.

XD

I saw it, and I definitely didn't think it was a slingshot thing.

I mean... It's kind of difficult to mistake it when you reach through and throw it over your shoulder, or on the ground.

there is the abortion visual. u put both sticks in the shape of a V in your left hand put ur right hand in between then as if you pulling the baby out put the baby on the drum head then do a rim shot with both sticks to chop its head off.

The "disappearing stick" visual!! I don't know how to explain good, but you put both stick in a hand, then bunch of arm movements until you end up with a sick hidden behind your arm, hence the disappearance. Then you make it re-appear. It's really cool, look around for it to get a better explanation or video! I love it though!

Just a hint. I'd stay away from visuals of things that you can do jail time for...

Some of the coolest visuals are "inside jokes" that are just funny you, or have a theme that is based around whatever you're playing. Have fun with it.

The cutthroat visual is so hardcore. I wish I could find somewhere to put it in our show. But it's STYX, so I don't think it would fit anywhere really well. Oh well, it's a nice drum battle visual.

Another one that tenors could do (but it works better with snares in traditional grip) is like a FOB "cock it and pull it". Hold the sticks one on top of the other in your left hand, then use your right to "cock" the top stick, then pull them both up like a gun recoil.

Find a video of FOB playing "Sugar We're Going Down". The drummer usually does it at least once.

Another good one I saw in a video was the tenors using their sticks like a fork and knife and "eating" off the spock drum.

Didn't the Cavalier tenor line do something like that for the "Gun Battle" sequence in 2004?

But the aforementioned cavaliers video can be found by searching for a video called "2004 Cavaliers Tenor Sectional" those visuals are toward the end.

Yes, the Blue Devils quad line does that visual in their 2006 show. You could do the Power V, as demonstrated by the Glassmen snare line in this video.

Yeah Rhythm X in the lot at Dayton in 06, I saw that one live, that was a funny visual. As I recall they make a cutting motion, then they act like they eat it, then they rub their bellies. Pretty sure it's on youtube. That was the year they had all the items in front of the tenors that they had stolen out of Tim Fairbanks' house the night before, including a Cavaliers poster entirely in Japanese, and his microwave(!). They were also cooking burgers and selling them. I'm sure the visual is in one of these videos

there is a very good video of Star '93 doing this. the tenor players 'snort a line' during a fast snare triplet roll toward the end of the show.

our drumline has a few traditional visuals that we try to do every year.

one is the shopping cart, which the snare line hold their sticks in front of them like they are pushing a shopping cart and pretend we are taking things off shelves and dropping them in.

another is 'random dance' visual....i think this one is self explanitory.hehe.

in '06 during the last push in our Super Man show, the snare line did an 'Abortion' followed by a 'Come on down the price is right'....it was pretty good.

in '06 during the bass solo in Bunco Rules, the snare line did the 'BaseBall' visual...it looked really good. I have video of it somewhere and will post it when I find it. The video of us playing Bunco I have on youtube actually has the camera focusing on the bass' during the solo, so you miss the visual...oh well.

a cool one to do during holds is taking off your drum and holding it victoriously abover your head. or if you cant support that, kneel and hold it in front of you. and theres also the one where you take it off, stand it vertically with one hand on the drum and the other on your hip with your chest out. very triumpant. you can point while doing that one too.

I am a fan of the "DJ Visual" on the Tenors. With 2 sticks in your right hand, you put your hand to your ear. With your left, act like you are scratching a record on drum 4.
