This was said to us after we got a few best in class awards at a competition this year, and basically he said the same thing after we passed state for the first time in the history of our school

I saw a shirt that said "Put it on the Knome," and it had a picture of a garden knome on it. It was pretty sweet.

There's an old African proverb that a fraternity brother once told me in college. It was profound enough for me that I pass it on to my students at the beginning of every season. It goes like this...

Every morning in Africa the sun rises. When the sun rises the antelope wakes. The antelope knows, on that day, he has to be faster than the fastest lion or he'll be eaten. Every morning in Africa the sun rises. When the sun rises the lion wakes. The lion knows, on that day, he has to be faster than the slowest antelope or he'll starve. The moral of this proverb is this...in this life, it doesn't matter whether you're a lion or an antelope. The only thing that truly matters is every morning, when that sun comes up, you better be running.

That African proverb was on the back of the cross country team's shirts last year, least I think it was cross country, some shirt.

This isn't really motivational or anything, but a quote used by our drumline a lot. Last year basically all the snares (3/4) didn't care about the drumline or band at all, and they would always see the band that we're competing against or in the halftime show with us and would be like "Man that band's so much better than us, we suck so much."

So the other tenor and I just took on the the phrase "their drumline can't beat or a**"

didn't really motivate anyone except me and him though.
