A big issue with cadences that i tend to notice in high schools is this: High schoolers tend to listen to beat oriented cadences, while the drummers may want something more technical. So when it comes to a drumline battle, maybe you should focus a lot more on grooving your beats more. It seems mind blowingly boring, but you're school will like it more, giving you an edge in battles.

High schoolers tend to listen to beat oriented cadences, while the drummers may want something more technical... It seems mind blowingly boring "beat oriented" and technical aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. Look at Murray Gusseck's Double Beat or the end of Grevious' Groove or... pretty much any DCI top 12 cadence ever. Street Beat? G11? All that stuff grooves hard, at least in parts, while still being very technical. Street Beat's a great example, the groove towards the end with the rim clicks going in to the high lift on the right hand, not a hard part per say but you'd never be bored playing it. My point is, "technical" doesn't mean "not fun to listen to" and grooving doesn't mean easy/boring.

To our Band Director, drumline is just part of the band and nothing else. The drumline is a part of the band. It's the elitist attitude you're trying to portray that most band directors hate. "Look at us, we're the drumline, we should get to do whatever we want because we hit drums." also now that i'm venting my anger last year m school got 5 new yamahs basses 2 new quints and 0 new snares. we still have these 7 year ld snares where on one of them the snare strainer wont even stay on with screws so we had to super glue it. that really annoyes me that the rest of the line gets new stuff and the snares get zip. o yea...they also got new carriers and we still get our old ones.
sry about this post i know i was venting my anger but it felt good.
LOL I'm almost positive that every high school in the country has budgets. Those budgets every year are getting smaller and smaller. Perhaps maybe, just maybe your school couldn't afford to buy a full line this year. Did that thought ever cross your mind? 7 years is older, but not that old for a line. The school I teach hate is coming up on year 7 with their drums and they are still going strong. Yes, we are looking at buying new drums in the near future, but only because we are looking at other color options to best fit our uniform design.

i understand where you are all going with the grove thing and i do hear that but i am looking for an idea to modivate my line.
and also i know my school does have a budget and i understand why we couldent get the snares but it is more a frustruation than anything else.

I didn't really think about that, whenever high school cadences come to mind it think of...Drumline the movie and such. It's terrible, but come to think of it, there are a vast array of groove oriented cadences that are very technical.
