i usually use all the felts on basses 4&5 and then i take away 2 for 1,2&3. it sounds really nice. I like how the upper basses have a little bit of overtone and then the bottoms have a lot of bottom end it sounds great.

For those that have used them a lot in the past, when you remove a felt or two do you remove adjacent felts, or do you use the recommended pattern of felts across from each other? Have you ever used extra foam in addition to the felt system? How do you place it?
Usually, I've started with the foam all the way around and used the "opposite corners of the circle" approach like I do for tuning the head. Once I can get the sound I want from one side, the other gets set up the same way. I have noticed (this might be just with my drums, I've heard people say differently) that setting every single head up the same in terms of the muffling seems to make the line blend better when you have it tuned up.
Like I said, I've heard people swear differently, and I know several people who hate the muffling system, but that's what worked for me.
