Extendo Triplet Diddle. Cheese Accent Breakdown. Flam Five Breakdown. Mini Three. The first exercise is the all important triple diddle exercise. Without strong hand to hand diddles, cheese and flam five patterns will not be accomplished effectively. The triplet diddle exercise strengthens the double stroke as well as creates comfort with the hand to hand motion. The second two exercises work hand independence, so that each hand can develop the motion and consistency needed for cheese and flam five construction. The third exercise is a triplet diddle style exercise that meshes diddles and flam accents together incrementally to develop cheeses, flam drags, and flam fives. All exercises are courtesy of www.snarescience.com, a fantastic website with a large library of both standard and unorthodox exercises to work your chops, as well as a load of transcribed snare music from various shows (it's not my site, so this isn't just a shameless plug).

Check out Jeff Queens video "Playing with Sticks". It has really helped me. Also, I recommend the Rudimental Cookbook by Edward Freytag. The biggest help I can give & that is not much is that make sure you have a very strong handle on the PASIC 40 rudiments before attempting hybrids. You might also find a DCI veteran in your area that can help you with those diddle hybrids.

alright. I can get 16th note cheeses at about 100 bpm.
I don't know what the problem is, though, because I can play other similar rudiments like flam paradiddles, flam taps, swiss triplets, etc. no problem.

yea, i do think it is more menatl because when you break it down it is much more simple. this will help a lot because i know i can play fast doubles so that is true swisses arent that complex and cheeses are just a diddle with a grace note. that helpa a bunch. thanks.

if you play them slow enough with a sort of "loose flopy" feel to them youre actually learning the technique for faster tempos. personally for me they just clicked after a while...there was no exercise that helped me just after a while they sounded good and didnt feel wierd to play

When I learned cheeses (and flam 3's, 4's, etc.) I played Sanford Double Beat and added a grace note on the first note of each set of notes, essentially playing just cheeses (or 3's, 4's, etc.). Once you get comfortable with the feeling/ motion of cheeses, play them on the downbeat of a set of 16ths (Freytag version of applying a cheese) or downbeat of triplets (cheeselets). Spend most of your time playing the 16th version off of your weak hand (usually left) in order to improve that hand's cheeses because they will be noticeably weaker at first. THEN use all of the above exercises and "the grid"/ 4-2-1 to gain more experience with them and to apply them.
(NOTE: the flammed-double-beat exercise is original, but was inspired by a section of my High School's book last year)

Play in front of a mirror when practicing. Here you can see your heights grip and overall technique. heights is a major thing when control and speed. What i do is focus on the one hand patterns detail it with a met and a mirror. Do the other hand then put them together and not let it get any worse than the single hands. build on that bump tempo up maybe switch through one hand patterns and the whole rudiment.

They just started working. It's totally a mental thing, you just have to play it enough to wrap your head around it, then it'll be easy.
