Sophmore year of high school:
friend: you should join the band and play drums (I had always wanted to drum)
me: yeah im in!
friend: you can play quads
me: ok, what are those?

and here I am... I think I fell in love with the way they sound though.

I played flute for 5th grade through 8th grade concert band. I decided to get drum lessons from a senior a little over a year ago, and now I'm in 9th grade. I made tenor drum (not tenors, just a single tenor drum) for marching band and bass for indoor. But neither really amaze me like tenors do. Bass is fun and I now have a better respect for the bass line, but tenors just have a great sound. The reason I practice them so much is because I truly love playing them - I think the more you enjoy playing an instrument, the better you are - because you actually want to practice.

I played 1st bass last year which was fun, but i always have loved the sound of the quints and it just seemed like a fun instrument to play with all the sweeps and crossovers-it just seemed to have such variety. Anyways, the section leader played quints and this past winter, he helped me prepare for tryouts. There are two tenors in my drumline, and I made one of the spots. 1st girl on them in quite a while! Sorry about the long post.

hmm
that's an interesting question
when i first entered drumline, immediately i wanted to play those bad boys
you have to admit, when you're a young'n, your eyes are immediately drawn towards the guy who's playing crossover sweeps and the like honestly, playing quads just looks awesome
and quads are more than just, as non-drumline people say, "meaningless sound", it pretty much provides the melody for the line

and my trad isn't quite up to par anyways =)

Here's my story:

It was freshman year 2006...I was on bass 3 and my best fried, lets call him "R" was on Quads. We had just gotten some new Dynasty's that year (I mean a whole new line of drums). They smelled like pancakes...which proves how new they were...

The night before the last performance of our season, R calls up and says he's going to be sick. Now, our band was really small, so we had 1 tenor (R), 3 snares, and 3 basses (kind of weird balance, huh?). At this same performance 2 of our snares were going to be gone, and one bass too. We were basically screwed sound wise...

So, I gathered the courage, and all my musical knowledge, and memorized the entire show on the quads the night before. It was kind of tough because I didn't know which order the drums went in, or how they were positioned on our dynasties. But I learned the music and played it the next day. (I HAD NEVER TOUCHED THE QUADS PRIOR TO THAT!!)

Anyways, after realizing that I had the potential to play the quads and to accomplish anything that I set my mind to, I decided to dedicate my life to playing the Quads....

well in junior high my 7th grade and beginning band year at the school i was at; you could take band twice a day..of course i jumped at this oppurtunity so that i could get better and ahead of the others. i took it for 3/4's of the year..

and i'll admit when i first joined band i was a typical person who only wanted to do snare.. well snugglebunny of times high school drummers would come in there in my second band class of the day ..mainly this one and he helped me snugglebunny...one day he got bored in there and got out his tenor and started playin... and i much like others on this topic thread was enthralled by the sounds, the scrapes, the accuracy it took, and just the endless possibilities of the instrument..from that day i knew i would end up marching tenors in high school.. and though im not on them just yet..its actually sooner than i had planned at first...so thats it

when i was smaller, like in 6th grade. i would see my local high school drumming almost everyday and i thought that the quads sounded awesome and cool. so that made me want to try out for them. my middle school didnt have quads, only tris. Once i was going to high school, i tried out for quads and made it, and now its going to be my second year playing it.
