i agree looks like a piece of plastic. maybe its similar a rim guard on a bass except on the side of the tenor for when people hit in that area sometimes. but then who knows just a thought i guess. beats just havin a random piece of plastic i suppose lol

It does look like a piece of Plexiglass, pretty interesting.
Didn't they use a metal one year in the same place?

What disturbs me is the fact the second tenor guy in, his spock is angled back. Wonder what thats about.

It looks as though the 8's are mounted to drum one and two. Since the rest of them are fairly flat, it could be that halfway through rehearsal the mounting hardware loosened up or shifted tilting the 8 back like that.

With the back bar they us (XL Omni rail) its impossible to drill it to drum two. the rail is similar to Dynasty. Honestly XL stuff is just shoddy, I never had luck with any of their products. neither did anybody I know who used their stuff.

They play a lot of notes on the rim guards. My instructor is one of the drum sergeants this year for them and they're playing some really sweet stuff.

Yeah, 2004 if I recall correctly.

I would bet the plexiglass rim guard will creat some sort of Samurai-ninja effect for the show. maybe clashing swords....

Here's what I have to say about that spock angling back: it could be that the spock isn't attached to the 1 & 2 drums at all, but is attached to the rail behind it. and my guess is that this particular Cavies tenor player decided to sacrifice the spock being level with the rest of the drums in order to stand as straight as the rest of the line.

...or it could be faulty hardware.

I bet the answer of the angled spock is more simple... like it was a quick mod for that camp to their OLD drums. If you notice, the spocks are all level in recent pictures with the new drums.

We sure do like to make mountains out of molehills around here.

I was planning on shooting over to the dress rehearsal tonight in Dekalb. I think I'll print up the picture and ask the guy why his spock was tilted. In return, he will give me an answer which I will post here. At that time the world will start spinning again and we can all stop losing sleep wondering why a spock drum in the Cavliers tenor line was slightly tilted back during a weekend camp.

How's CAC going Scott?
