So my snare line uses matched, so there was no demand to learn traditional grip. But now I'm realizing that for drum corps (I plan on trying for snare in troopers in 2 years) I don't think I'm cut out for world class bass (it really is the hardest in corps shocked ) and I don't want to march a summer of tenors. So i need to learn traditional, any tips???

ask your instructor, assuming your line has one,for help on it when you have some spare time. like before class/practice or i imagine your band camp will be starting soon..so before things get started and everyones still getting there would be a good time.

get rudimental logic, and look at the grips in the 1st chapter, and practice with that hand.

This forum has a great Left handed technique thread it's stuck to the top of the snare playing forum. I would check that out as well if you can't get your hands on Rudimental Logic which is a great book by the way.

I did look at that, but the techniques I've tried have felt too stiff when i play.

When first learning it's going to be really awkward and stiff because your left hand is not used to rotating like that. Your brain is telling your hand that your not playing correctly if that makes sense. Give it some time and your muscles will "Memorize" what it feels like. Just be sure that you are playing with correct technique.

I would try to find someone who knows Trad grip to come help you. It is hard to do things like that on your own and for it look right.

However if you can't have some one teach you...the mirror is your friend.
