You have to find a balance.

Our drumline starts practicing in January for the next years season. If you start out relaxed and work up to being more harsh, it works. Some think that if you start out being soft the kids will get used to it but if you surprise them every once in a while with a bit of hardness it makes them realize its time to get focused.

I believe that the summer should be summer. You should work hard but keep things fun and relaxed.

One thing to do is warning when you're going to step things up a notch, lets say band camp, and then sticking to your word and proving your point. I think keeping your word on things is one of the most important things to get people to respect you.

Also, demand more ALWAYS. Attention to detail is what we emphasize. If you want to see some better playing get aggressive when you want more (dynamics, listening in etc.). Then back off immediately and they will be scared to lose focus and try their hardest.
