So I was wondering what peoples thoughts are on getting a back brace to march tenors in a corps all summer.

we are marching Yamaha tenors with a spock, (10,12,13,14,6...i think..maybe)
I'm not sure how much they weigh.

My caption heads highly recommended one, but some of the vets said that I wouldn't need it. Im pretty small 5'8, 145lbs

what do you think?

I've never known anyone to do it and I wouldn't think you would need to unless you already have a pre-existing back problem. It would also give you a pretty screwed up tan.

Some people and parents told me I should get one because I'm so small (5'4", 125 lbs.), but I didn't really bother. I think the Yamahas I march, which are the same size as the corps' you speak of, are something like 30-35 lbs.

You should be fine, as long as you support with your abdominals enough, and not just your back. If you haven't yet, try doing some crunches/sit-ups, or other ab exercises. We do that regularly in my band, so it's not much of a problem. It shouldn't be too hard for you.

Good luck!

I found out about a month ago that I am marching tenors this year in my HS. I was considering getting a back support also becuase I am 5'6" and 130 lbs. Then I read on here that I should just strengthen my back and abdominal muscles (like mentioned above), and I figured I'd just be fine with that. I am marching Yamaha's too (but they are 6,8,10,12,13)

Nooo you definitely don't need a brace.
I'm sure you already made your decision by now.
Just someone decided to post on this a few minutes ago so.. I decided to post on it too.

I marched next to a guy who tried a brace for a little while, but he found wearing the brace to be more uncomfortable than carrying the drums. (It gets hot and sweaty under there, and I think the drum carrier may have been sitting on the buckle for the brace.)

...but guys, I think QuadManChan may have already found the answer. This thread is a few months old, so chances are he's been carrying the drums for a while now.

you really dont need a brace...you just need to build up the muscles to carry the drum comfortably

As stated above, unless you have a pre-existing back problem, you really shoudn't need one. Take it from me: I am about your exact size (5'7", 150 lbs.), and I marched tenors for three years now. never needed a brace.
