A few hundred bucks a month during the competition season if you're lucky. Gas money (or less) if you're not.

There's a lot of variables involved. How much money the program has, how much booster support there is, your teaching experience, your playing experience, how many rehearsals you'll be at, how many competitions you'll travel to, any arrangements you'll write, etc.

If you're lucky the band will have enough cash so you can negotiate a salary. If not then then the band director may just pay a flat rate. If you're young and trying to make a name for yourself then take whatever you can get. You'll spend the cash but the experience never goes away.

Zero bucks is common.

Also, a flat rate for band camp is common.

It really depends on a lot of variables. They could give you 500 bucks for 2 weeks of band camp (and then its pretty much just volunteer work for the rest of the season). Some successful programs may have the funds to pay their staff each month.

But most importantly, don't think that you can get paid enough to have some extra cash in your pocket. Given today's gas prices, whatever they give you will simply be a dent to offset costs for you. If you want to make money, being a drum line instructor really isn't the way.

I would get $500 for 2 weeks of band camp, then $500 for each parade/football season where I was needed.

This is going back a few years but I used to get $500 for 2 weeks of band camp (11 hour days, 5 days a week) plus writing/arranging the book and warm ups. The rest of the season I showed up to as many competitions, rehearsals and parades as my real job schedule would allow. I considered this volunteer hours and so did the band. The last line I worked for didn't pay me anything and I was cool with that, they needed the money far more than I did, though I did get a nice dinner and a few "milks" from the principle at the end of the year. It's never about the money for me, although I do have bills to pay and do require some compensation for my time and travel expenses. I did it because I love the activity. I'd love to work with a line this year (or more likely next) be it for little or even no money.

When I taught last year I was given $300 for 1 week of band camp, then the rest of the season was volunteer work.

During this year, however, I was only given $250 for 1 week of band camp. It really didn't bother me any. I would have gladly done it for free. The band needs the money just as much as I do (no paying job + paying rent + college student = not good). Regardless, I would do anything for the group of people I teach. I drive 3 hours round trip twice a week to work with them but it is worth every cent that I spend on gas and every minute that I'm there teaching.

As corny as this is going to sound, the monetary pay you get is nothing compared to the feeling you'll have from helping good people and doing something that you love.

My entire pay for two seasons of teaching - $0.

I gladly do it for free, though. It gives me a chance to work with kids that need it. Their band program can't afford to pay staff, so I totally understand. All of us that are a part of the staff do it for free. The only exception are the actual band directors because they're linked directly to the school. But it also gives me a good opportunity to get some experience teaching, and I've gotten to meet quite a few good people. Plus I got a sweet t-shirt and staff badge. wink It's been a good pay-off.

I'm not sure about tech, but as a very young college senior teacher, I near 15 an hour, or around 100 for a day of camp, these change according to the school, but thats the usual around here in ms.
