Get the j hooks parallel to each other and then adjust the things on the bar to accommodate the j hooks, other than that, I don't know.

I've never heard of the drums being to close, I've heard of them being to far, but I've never heard of them being to close. Try getting a mallet, if your having problems with them to close, stay away from sticks, get a short mallet. You probably also have small block tenors, Those are just that, really small. They are a complete pain to get around.
Other then that, do what you have to do, take some time and practice, you should get used to it. And when you do get some big blocks (which I'm assuming you don't have) I would think the long arms would help you move the opposite hand to drums 3 and 4.
