i'm considerably new to drumming (5 lessons-1 book) and i was wondering if anyone could tell me/show me how to do some rudiments. I know the basics, like flams and paradiddles, but that's pretty much it. I am only in marching percussion, not concert, so that's mainly what I'm pertaining to. Thanks for all your help!

thats cool im considerably new two but i know most of my stuff its a lot easier for me to tell you were to go than attach a file i dont have .So simply go to www.VicFirth.com and the page will pop up and theres the welcom screen. then look up towards the top right corner and youll see education put your mouse on there and it will open up a lil drop down list then mouse over on to student center and right there is a link that says 40 rudiments, and click that then youll be able to practice all 40 of em right there, and theres stuff to play along with to help you manage em and get em better.Hope i helped

ya those are excellent, also on the vic firth site you can go to http://www.vicfirth.com/education/features/freshapproach/intro.html for 'A fresh approach to the Snare Drum', its really good it has a recording of each exersise so you can hear how to do it if you don't understand.

with out a doubt the hardest rudiment i've ever heard of are book reports. i can barely play em. if any one has heard of em, or a harder one, id like to hear it.

I thank all of you for your help, and tips, but why did nobody tell me there's a page on this stuff on the links? I found that and it helps me a ton! The Vic Firth site has helped me, though. I mastered all of the paradiddles, but I still have a little trouble on the paradiddle-diddles. I always seem to screw up the second diddle. Any suggestions?

Im really really new too, but from reading the past 2 weeks and doing a lotta research on drumming, I can say that you may need to keep at it and practice slower and gradually pick up the paste.
Ha! sounds right, thats what im doing anyway if Im wrong please someone come along and tell me to put a lid on it lol.

mother fu**ers(flam para-diddle-diddles) and upbeat flam drags seem much more difficult to me...

drumnsax2-for paradiddlediddles [i just LOVE that word, its almost as much fun to say as pataflafla..] the key is PRACTICE...i know you hear it all the time..sorry. well try this-when i come across rudiments that i cant play well [such as the chutra-cheese....i'm getting into hybrids a lot lately and that one irks me..] i just take it REALLY REALLY SLOW and make sure i get all the sticking exactly right. then i go a likkle bit faster, and then a little faster still. drumming is all muscle memory. for me, once i learn it on my right hand lead i can transfer it to left like THAT *snaps fingers*. good luck!

a chutra-cheese specifically is waaaay too hard to type out so here's a link. the site itself has a TON of hybrids... http://www.geocities.com/hotsprings/9356/hybrid2.gif a chutra-cheese is number 15. have fun kids.

Anyways, about those 40 rudiments on the vic firth website. Notice his technique. It's very important you keep that in mind as well. He uses a very flexible relaxed technique. Incorporate some of that into your own technique it helps. I had the previlage of having Dr. Wooton do a personal clinic with our line, it was a great learning experience.

I noticed that. Also, I noticed that they had music, which helped me a lot because I read music much better than I listen and respond to things.
I still don't know what hybrids are....

hybrid rudiments are combinations of the forty basic rudiments. they combine flams, diddles, rolls, malf taps, almost anything you can think of into different rudimetns designed to a. help you warm up, b. increase hand speed, c. work on reading/recognizing skills, and d. practice what you would see in the basic rudiments in a harder pattern, as just a practice. they're great.

answer your question? if not i can go further in debt.

since drummerbabe's link to the hybrids didn't work (can't link directly to imgs through geocities), here's the webpage with the links there:

You have the rest of your life to go into debt, so you don't need to spring any cash in order to answer Drumnsax2's question. Now if you wanted to go into depth, that would be another story.

LOL. Thanks, I get what a hybrid is now, so you don't gotta go into depth. But, I'd like it if you did go into debt and have to pay me a little money...I'm just kidding. Thanks for all of your help!

Haha, I just love how that one handed roll eric does sounds so consistent yet the stick misses bounces here and there all over the place.
