I'm new at playing quads, i mean i marched them this year, but when i looked at other people playing at contest, they had so much style, but when i play, it seems boring and too easy, might just be because of the show, but i just need some help, like practice suggestions and ways to perfect my playing. On a scale from 1 to 10, i would say im a 3. Anything would help guys.

inda funny coming form someone named "The Quad Father" but anyway. You need to work with new music and play more. You can never practice to much.Get exposed to lots of music learn to groove and ram and rock and jazz and anoy of those other buzz words for playing styles. You'll also get better with time you said you marched one year with them well more than likely the people that you saw in competition had more than one year under their belt. I'll catch ya on Aim i have some stuff i can send ya..

Well you can also get some private lessons to help you out. Ask your drum instructor if you have one to give you some lessons. You can go to your local music store and see if they offer quad lessons there. Some stores do. Get yourself exposed to harder music. Try to play everything slow at first. One step at a time. After that is basically practice time.

I was the same way when I first marched quads now I love them and miss them cause Ive moved on to what I wanted to play but what I did was play them during pep season and I had a lot of music to play on them witch helped me out then with like sweeps and cross overs and such I just stayed in the band room at break and played them it drawed some people I never knew in too that was pretty cool I still play at break so I wont get worse

Yeah, listen to tenor freak.....get into all the corps music that is out there. Order the cavies audition book too.
they have a whole array of exercises to challenge your tenor playing. Just get exposed to as much music as you can amd try to get recordings of the music so you can play along with it. I hope that this helped! Good luck on your technique!!!!!! PEACE!!!!

If he's only a 3/10, I don't know how much of the Cavaliers audition book he'll be able to make his way through, let alone corps music.

Start with the basics. Julia Davila's book Modern Multi-Tenor Techniques and Solo is a great place to start (it's available from Row Loff for about $12 I believe).

yeah, not all the music in the cavies audition is hard. Stick control and Bucks are very good exercises for beginners. And when they get better with their diddles, they can work on mojo and New Dublin. So, I am not saying for him to play the hard stuff (although I personally believe that he should be exposed to that stuff).

Hey man was also new at playing this year except it was quints but its techniclly the same thing cause half of my music was quads, and i know what u r saying, but as most of the guys have said so far just practice, practice anywhere, take a pair of sticks and just bang on the table or somthing but visualize it as your quads or take 4 different books and space them as your quads and use them. But never sell youself short cause quads/quints r had to play and it takes some a lot of practice and some it just comes to them. But as long as you stick to it and watch these other guys at contest i'm sure you can pick some stuff up, thats what i have done and it works or go on the internet and look for some cadences or buy a book that shows you some new things you can't do or have tried to do but just couldn't do it exactly right. But keep it up and it will get better
