(I don't know if I should have put this in the History forum or the Rudiments forum.)

Ok, so I'm really in to cheese. I can't help but love an embellished diddle. I was wondering, if anyone could tell me around what time cheese rudiments began to be incorporated into show music/solos/cadences. Perhaps give an example of an old peice of sheet music that has cheese? I know that it would probably be impossible to pinpoint exactly who "invented" or "discovered" the cheese, but the question has intrigued me. -swisscheese

I am sure the rudiment has been around for a while and I can get you back to at least 1985. I remember the first time I tried to play them, Mike Farrell of the famous "Tickless Tenors" of the SCV told me that they were called "Flam Doubles" It wasn't until 1987 that I heard the term "Cheese". That doesn't mean that the term "Cheese" wasn't being used, just that I hadn't heard it. When I did hear it I remember thinking that it sounded Blue Devilish. Hope that helps get you started.

Cheese is the most natural and oldest way of preserving the nutrients in milk. Popular belief has it that a shepherd in about 4,000 BC carrying milk in a pouch made from a sheep’s stomach accidentally discovered cheese. The rennet from the sheep’s stomach lining and heat from the sun separated the milk into curds and whey.
