solution... try as hard as you can do be a good leader in your drumline, without an instructor however hard that is. In the meantime, pratice your butt off and join corps.

My drumline isn't very disciplined either! I find that it is not a bad idea to let them know who's boss every now and then. I am one of the percussion captains in my drumline and when I am not happy with someone, they will usually get an earfull from me. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to get up in their face about certain things. Especially if you have had to ask them repeatedly to stop doing something!

discipline is a section leaders job, that's why he or she is the section LEADER. A section leader is supposed to be a role model for the rest fo the section, they should present good attitude and good practice habits. Being a leader, the person has to take responsiblity for the line, So they need to do what they can to enforce discipline.
An instructor also does the same thing, but they also play the role of the experienced teacher. If they are going to teach a line how to play correctly, he or she must have full attention from everyone. If someone(s) in the drumline is acting up, they must take action and punish the students.

Section leaders acting as disciplinarians is usually a bad idea...especially in a high school ensemble. It can cause a lot of bitterness and resent among the students...not to mention the fact that most high school section leaders know absolutely nothing about positive/negative reinforcement, how to use it, etc. The section leader should know what the instructor expects, be on the same page, and lead by example. If necessary, it's ok to talk to someone who's dropping the ball behind the scenes, but it's not the section leader's gig to assign punishments and call people out in public/during rehearsal, etc.
And no, that's not why someone is a section leader. Section leaders are typically chosen (in my eyes) because they are responsible, possess the ideal playing ability, and are good leaders (leaders...not punishers).

I am BIG into discipline and it pays off in how they play. Yes it may cause some to quit or not join but I have a core set of kids that make the ensemble amazing.
