When i'm without sticks, i tend to focus more on the stuff that I can't play. I'll sit there and run it through my head as if i were playing it, then i'd play them really slow with my fingers to get a feel. Then by the time I get in a position to use sticks, the licks (rudiments, etc...) seem a little more familiar to me.

I just beat on the desk with my hands, flat or wrapped as if I were holding a stick.
I do this very much when I'm bored in school..which is pretty much anytime except Symphonic Band.

Most humorous when the spanish teacher tells me "No musica por favor"

I've always used class to compose music and to work on rudimental patterns...I learned to play flam taps a few years ago in German and ive tried to learn a new ruidment or pattern every so often in class. As has been mentioned many times above, its also great for cleaning parts of a show or piece.

I'm a firm believer that drumming is 95% mental, 5% physical. So with that said, almost all of my "non-stick" practice time goes to thinking about passages I've been working at - playing them in my head and observing a "virtual drummer" play them and realizing what motions my arms and hands need to be doing to get the clarity and notes going correctly.
