These are in my opinion the most God-awful son of a guns to play. I searched for tips and such on how to play them and came up short. Can anyone give me some tips? The problem I have is putting the diddle on the flam. How did you go about mastering these two rudiments? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you always keep the grace note low. There is an exercise that might help. It is all triplets and it is like this. 4 triplets with the first note accented, 4 triplets with the first note diddles, 4 triplets with the first note flammed, and then 4 triplets with the first note chessed. IM me if you want the sheet music of it. I was not able to post it.

That a nice exercise. You could even add a couple more sets of triplets for the flam fives, putting 4 triplets with the first two notes diddled, and then 4 triplets of flam fives.

Yeah, I just mentally had to put Flam Accents and diddled triplets together. Like..merging them together. I'm a mental person (not crazy!).

I believe book reports are harder, though.

Cheeses & Flam Fives aren't really hard - that's the reason they are so popular. With some work and good overall technique, anyone can play them.

People talk about the heights of the grace notes, which are important, but the thing often forgotten about flams is the spacing needed to make the rudiment sound correct. The most common problem is letting the grace note hit too early, you must drop it in low, but NOT early. This is the big problem with flammed fives in most average players.

Just break it down as what it is - a flammed diddle, make sure your flam sounds good and your diddle(s) sound good, then work on putting them together. Remember that if they feel "Weird" you are not controlling your heights or the spacing.

Five stroke roll (rrllr llrrl) then flam the first diddle. They can be triplets (usually are), but basically just as it sounds a flammed five stroke roll.

The way I taught myself to play cheeses was by tapping triplets with my left hand and placing diddles on the 1st partial of every triplet. do this until it feels natural to play cheeses in a same hand flam accent pattern. Now switch hands and do it until it feels natural on your left. When the basic cheese motion feels natural, put them into the usual hand to hand flam accent pattern. Combine this with flam drags for flam fives. Drumming is mostly muscle memory so when it feels natural u can put them anywhe...err...almost anywhere.
