Refrain from using "gay" in a negative manor or your posting privileges will be revoked.

em..interesting That was interesting its It's cool to hear from what yall you all think of show style bands. At first, I used to think that showbands were just stupid b/c because all the notes they played seemed all easy and the marching wasn't even marching, you know. ? Just this past year, we ended up getting a new instructor and he came from prarie view Prairie View. wow Wow, what a change. Before he came we had a guy from baylor Baylor teaching us and he was into snugglebunny a lot of cavie's The Cavalier's stuff, so we played some of their warm-ups. you know. Anyways, he kept trying to change my technique and all that i I got pissed b/c because I was sticking to the bluecoats Bluecoats' technique and he was messing it all up. Later, we had a talk about this same discussion on the board and this is what he told me. He was like, "what What would you rather do, entertain 5,000 fans every game or play for 3 judges for 1 time. once?" I just told him I didn't know. Anyways, tho yea show style bands do believe are more about the visuals. Visuals are apart a part of the music too. it It makes it just as hard. I know some people are like, " man Man, all they do is play a few rolls and fill up the gaps with visuals... ." well its Well, it's more than just that. He was telling me they played stuff like 96' blue devils shopping spree etc.. The '96 Blue Devils' Shopping Spree, so they really can play some notes. Another thing ill I'll give to the showbands is that the stickings are phenomenal. they They are pretty crazy.. , plus they are all together. I've seen soo many college lines that are so sloppy. Like I said though, that's apart a part of the music too. The Only only thing I don't agree with is the marching. its It's pretty thuper. but yea owell. Either way, both sides (corps and show style) have the goods and bads, but if you know how to play both ways the better player you are... besides Besides, we are all percussionists. thats That's just my opinion..

The red letters...the ignorance...ahhh!! My eyes! Somebody get me some Clorox, I need to clean these babies out. So many people want to go straight into a Corps vs. Show bash right away, and they don't provide factual evidence to back up their point. Jeff Queen isn't that good? Dude, I don't care how flashy your band is, there's a reason he has all of the acclaim he does. Because he's FRICKEN GOOD. A lot of that is practice, yes, but it's also natural ability. Chances are, people on this board might one day come close to his playing ability, but he's one of those rare people that continuously stay one step ahead of the game.

So don't try and bash him because he doesn't do all of your complicated visuals. Personally, I don't think visuals make the music. They're just that: a VISUAL aspect. Music is the notes that you are reading and playing. Sound. I believe that's what makes music, not dancing/showing off.

Whew... I feel like I've been cutting onions! *wipes eyes*

Aside from not liking the marching styles (which will vary where you go), Bigmar is a prime example of how people judge new and different things before they know what it's about.

Having misconceptions causes a dislike of things for many people, and only until they experience it for themselves do they understand. The same is equally true through the eyes of a purely Showstyle person going to Corps.

Also, since I don't think I stated my stance clearly enough...

I have not seen enough of show-style marching bands to really make much of a judgement on them. Therefore, as far as I'm concerned, they're pretty awesome bands. From what I understand, the visuals and marching are generally more complicated than corps style, but the music is not as difficult. I don't know for sure if this is true or not, but I am by no means bashing either type. My personal taste sways more towards the corps side, although as I said, I have nothing against show style.

Orangecrush,

Where in Richmond are you? I would love to see what your group does.

I am right outside of the city in Powhatan, let me know...

I don't think you're going to get an answer from him Neil. He was banned back in September of '04. However, the HS he went to was Armstrong HS in Richmond.

You seriously need to reacquaint yourself with Section 9 Paragraph 2 of the rules.

Ah, explains a lot...

It is more than amazing that people can't just drum and love it all because we have the opportunity to do it in the first place! There's my opinion.
