Hey guys, this is just a stupid survey asking if it's better marching in white marching shoes or black ones...Like in your uniform....I know black goes with all the dark colors and white with the light but still.

I have to wear white. But it doesn't really bother me. White or Black shoes don't really make a difference. It's more the brand I guess that makes either one better than the other.

Our band wears white shoes with black pants. The BDs say that the judges can see our "fancy footwork" better because it sticks out. But whatever.

Unless you're cool like Broken Arrow, they're the only band that I know of that wears both color shoes. Their uniform is half black and half white.. on the white side they wear a black shoe, and on the black uniform side the wear a white shoe. Looks sharp if you ask me.

White marching shoes are great if your marching program is spot on. The white shoes are a sharp contrast to the green fields which we march on. The white shoes are very unforgiving if your visual program is not up to snuff. Whereas black shoes blend more with the green field and are more forgiving. So the choice of footwear should reflect how well your group is marching and not so much on what colour is my uniform ect...

you took the words out of my mouth IronMan. the shoes really don't matter to me, but the fact that the white shoes show flaws in your marching gives a good reason why you gotta have the marching down pat.

We've worn white marching shoes since forever and a day. This year, we're wearing black. They're so much easier to take care of. All you have to do is white them down and you're good. With the white ones, you have to scrub them with a toothbrush and then put white shoe polish on it, and clean the laces. Gah! Oh, and if you step in mud right before a competition on accident () then it doesn't show up as bad.

To tell you the truth, I can't remember what I posted. Hmm, oh well.

Our uniform has been black since 1990. There's a big picture of the marching band kids from 1989, and their uniform is white, orange, and yellow. I'm guessing their shoes were white too.

White sticks out better, if you have a great marching band..go with white shoes, if your marching band is so so at marching with hi toes, then go with black because it's not as noticable as the white shoes.

We wear white shoes for everything during marching season. The only thing we really change is our pants. For football games we wear blue pants (red stripe), and for competitions we wear white pants (red stripe).

Basically the difference between black and white shoes is cleanliness. if your line has really good feet and can march together perfically, then you should go with white. but if theres a couple people in the line who still dont get it, black shoes are the way to go. thats what i believe but you do what is good for the line.

our band is white shoes and white pants. Keeping white shoes white is a real job. Even when they are brand new they still look dull compared to the white pants. I would think that black shoes are easy to take care of vs white shoes.

we use black shoes, and always have.

and because of our budget, we're going to be using the same ugly uniforms with the same black pants for all of my years at LHS.

so i'm guessing no white shoes for me.

it's just my opinion but i think white shoes look really sharp on the field.

Yeah, I always cleaned my shoes that way. My sister used bleach on hers & they turned an ugly off-white-almost-yellow color. It was pretty gross.

But my band's feet aren't that great, and so we got black shoes to go with blue pants. And we had a red stripe down the side & we took that off. We look cleaner & I'm betting we wouldn't look so good if we still had the stripe & the white shoes.

I like the black marching shoes a lot better than the white because if you don't have the best marching style, (although it should be the same), it really isn't as noticable rather than wearing white marching shoes which is.

Our shoes are rolled at the heal so that it is a lot more comfortable while marching and it isn't bad for your feet.

White shoes = "Hey, judges! You can spot anyone one of us off step at anytime and at any distance!"

During my sophomore year, we didn't have spats, which made it seem like we were good marchers. But the following year when they were added, gawd...

cleaning white shoes is a pain, black shoes are wasier to wipe off, plus they are lifesavers for the rookies that can't march. Since they blend in, but they match our uniforms.

My freshmen year we had white shoes but our pants were white. Well sort of, they were really old so they were more off white, but yea. When we got our new uniforms we switched to black shoes to go with the black pants. But in Jr. High we always had black pants, black shoes, and then white spats, and it looked REALLY good. Even now they’ve gotten new uniforms and the pants are dark blue, but we still do black shoes and white spats. Every show we go to we get complimented on the spats because they really show off the feet. But we also pay very close attention to the marching because if someone is out of step you can see it no matter where they are.

Our schools wears black shoes. Our uniforms have dark navy blue pants. Not much of a contrast, eh? Well too bad we wear nice shiny white spats. Oh my goodness, it looked so bad during the first week and band camp. To add on to this, out school is high step (except for drumline) so people who are out of step really stick out. Thankfully, our BD would personally yell at you after practice if you were out of step, so by our 2nd or 3rd game everyone was in step.

Quick question

Spat = ?
It sounds to me that you might be describing Plumes, idk though.

Theres 1 school in our county with white shoes, and their uniform is green. So their shoes usually end up green from walking in the grass.

so it all matches lol. haha that's Webmaestro's alma mater if I'm not mistaken.

Has anyone seen a group that isn't professional using something besides black or white?

We use black, which was lucky two years ago in San Diego for concert percussion when one of our players lost half his uniform (the bottom half; we share the pants and shoes for marching and concert - I'm not sure if everyone does this) and had to buy nice shoes to wear in place of them. I think it would've been a little harder to find white shoes.

I know what 628 means about white shoes exposing mistakes; a school that is the home of a rival football team of ours always brings their band to the last game. They wear white shoes, and it was painfully obvious if anyone ever got out of step (which, luckily, was not often).

Spats have nothing to do with plumes. You wear them over your shoes. Take a look...

Thats what we mean by "it shoes off your feet" because it really does. Your marching has to be perfect.

My school does black. I myself prefer black because it's harder to notice mistakes and looks clean from the stands. But when we get in formation for Uniform check, we get a grade for if our shoes are polished, and our uniforms are hithced and stiched right. You can get points taken off at contest for cruddy uniforms .

White shoes show up much better on the field. If your band has a lousy step style, I pray for you that they wear black.

We wore white at Madison Central and Eastern. At Central, we made it look good. At Eastern, not so much. Too many people were hung over, drunk, or stoned for the game for step style to survive.

I have always used black shoes because of the school colors. They can be a pain in the foot when marching in the hot weather, but it is all about the uniform. I had to wear black for six marching seasons; four at Hazelwood West, and two at Lindenwood University. And it will be seven next Fall.

My school wears white marching shoes because it goes with our uniforms, white pants with a red stripe and a red top. Also, we wear the white shoes because they show our mistakes ten times better than black shoes, and that causes us to march better.

We have black for band members, then white for the drum majors. I like the black more, hides a lot of the dirt and suckiness of people not doing the right thing.

well we have to wear black next year but we wore white this year. our uniforms are white, brown and gold but our band director decided black shoes show if we're out of step less. personally i liked the white a whole lot better. it went with our uniform and the black doesn't even match our brown pants.

I have to agree here...to a certain extent. I do believe that white shoes make your visual program look worse if your program is not great. However, I do not think that it makes the program look better if they are already great marchers. It the visual program is already great, then it will look great whether they are wearing white shoes or black shoes. I do understand the point of the contrasting in colors, but I just don't think that it would make much of a difference in the units' "greatness".

I noticed how gsDrummerGirl said her band director has them wear black to hide the bad marching and how prdrmmr08 likes them for the same reason. That's actually the main reason why we go with white shoes instead of getting darker colored uniforms. I cannot stand black shoes simply for the reason that most people get them to hide bad fundamentals. That's just my opinion, though.
