Directors hate us.

Every year the band director yells at us every day. I talked to a couple seniors and they said it will always be that way. Is it like that at your school?

That's pretty much the way it's going to be. At least thats how it was for me. What was worse for me was that even as a rookie in the drumline, I was one of the more mature and better players and really cared. (Our drumline is like a brotherhood, not a commander/underlings organization) So every Monday morning after a competetion, if something went wrong - I would get yelled at as if it were my fault. He would apologize later and I understood that that is how he was.
7 years later, I'm in my third year of teaching that line.

Hmm, well my band director definately hates percussionist period. He always yells at us to play softer, even when the music says fortisimo... But most of all he hates me, probably because I'm the only one of us that doesn't let him push us around.
Stand up for the little guy. Don't give in to the man!

Our Band director doesnt generally Yell at us until ABSOLUTELY necessary. He talks to us calmly and tells us the circumstnaces and the consequences and lets us choose our fate. It works everytime.

A good director is the type that will get angry with you and yell and spit and cuss. This type of conditioning will make you want to be better, and that's what you want isn't it? lol.
All in all, your band director may hate you, but he still needs the drumline.

Our band director doesn't like us. He always yells at us for some reason or another, mainly for hacking while he is talking. He doesn't really think we are musicians either. He never blames us for doing anything wrong though. It's always the wind players that he yells at for doing something wrong. That just shows where the real talent is. Oh Yeah!

hmmm.... well, My Director is a bit strange, he yells at us for the littlest mistake, it's never one person's fault it's the whole lines.. which is Understandable, but when you have 10 on a line, and only two wanna work.. (me and another) it gets on your nerves.. When we do something good, or even great.. it's "Why didn't you get that earlier, or it's nothing special, it's expected..." But that's really only during band class... sometimes after, during he REALLY yells... and gets mad, but after.. he's somewhat, err... nice. Strange as it may be... but, I'm sure he loves us the most, Just finished Tapping up our Harnesses... (cause they were crappy) haha !! although, he made us write huge Essays and tap them all over our drums, wonder when they will come off... >_>

Well here's my two cents (from a band director).....
Most band director's don't know much about percussion (especially marching percussion). Because they have no knowledge base for percussion, they can't really comment on much. Have you ever heard a director talk about the first left diddle in a tap roll? There's a reason for that.......... Anyway, because they don't know what to say they have no musical expectations for the percussion section so they have to turn to behavioral expectations. Make sense? Kind of a fear of the unknown. Most of you kids know way more about drumming than your band director and that intimidates some of the really insecure ones.
Actually, that was a cent and a half..........

After reading all these replies, I feel really lucky. Our band director gets really involved with the percussion section. He even comes to some of our rehearsals and tryouts, but he lets our percussion instructors yell and scream at us. (well it's not that bad...)

 Punctuation is your friend. Our BD always says we 're too loud . but tThis year he said we can 't do any visuals for some reason . I don 't want to piss him off since 3 years ago he took out the drumline and put them in pit for because the Ddrumline was doing Rrimshots in public .
